Technically, at least some photo ID birth certificate will be necessary (for Canadians entering the USA at least--I'm not sure about other nationalities).
The trouble you run into will completely depend on where you're crossing the border. I frequently cross between New Brunswick and Maine and 95% of the time US agents don't even check IDs (even post-Sept 11). But, this is a very rural crossing. At urban crossings, agents are much more up-tight. Either way, land crossings are WAY for more lax than entering the USA by air.
Be advised that racial-profiling is in full-effect and probably won't help out your case.
If they don't ask questions, you'll be cool. But if they're suspicious for whatever reason, you might run into a lot of trouble.
