Im working on a "zelda" - ish RPG game, in Flash MX with multi player with a friend of mine..
Have written some very decent scripts but running into issues with scrolling the background world... rethinking how it works, trying a few different methods. anybody have any ideas????

That link was nice, especially with the homosexual imagry...
anyone have any advice on scrolling large backgrounds?

break them up into individual area maps.
when you are one one map, do a lookup for adjacent maps and load those 4 so when the character reaches the 'end of the screen', the map scrolls to reveal the next map section.

Are you going the always centred route, or the reach the edge and then you scroll into the new section?
- mitsu0
since he said 'zelda', i assumed the latter.... otherwise, the scroll engine would work totally different.

ah, ok.

Hey guys, I was contemplating both ideas, where the whole area scrolls, or it only scrolls when you reac a certain area.
Actually thinking that there would be a center area where the character can walk freely, without scrolling the BG, then once the character hits that area, then the background starts scrolling
problem is frame rate. Ive tried tiling images and using Array lookups, and masking an entire area, they seem to both be bogged down, I think the key is in how it scrolls, Ive tried onEnterframe, and using Intervals, Intervals work far better....
Still not happy with the result.
Also want to work out some nice motion effects on the BG, like Inertia.

Flash is slow :)

have you tried setting the movie to _quality=low or medium just during the transition... that may work, and people won't notice too much.
It's also something that people are becoming accustomed to... such as josh davis, or yugop, they use that a lot...
we also do it in http://www.grafikmagazine.com
so that you get a really smooth and fast scroll

Ive got the quality on Low throughout the entire game!

don't do that. save your objects as btmps... vector objects slow things down
- JamesEngage0
still have it on low whether you have bitmaps or not...
are you running on a mac at the moment?
- Scotto5120
They are bitmaps, and I have it on LOW and I am running it on a mac.
Wanna see my files?
- JamesEngage0
no! they sound revolting :)
- Scotto5120
OK.

If anyone has any resources for sprites, tips, etc. please let me know.
Thanks

I saw a lecture of some dude who ported Commander Keen to Flash... it even read the commander keen level files! forget who it was.
but anyways, what you have to do is break the thing up into individual objects (not just break the level into a few chunks.) Then wherever you are, Flash only draws whats on screen.
email me if you have further Qs... I'm curious to see what you're working on, and am pretty solid with AS.
