noooooo!
"On 12th December sxc.hu was mentioned in the newsletter of a US-based hosting company as a useful resource where you can find free images for your home page. Unfortunately one of their clients reported the newsletter as SPAM on SpamCop.net, and sxc.hu became a so called "spamvertised website".
SpamCop.net immediately notified our ISP, Elender Online about SPAM-suspicious activity. In response the ISP pulled the plug out of our web server.
We find it outrageous that neither SpamCop.net, nor Elender Online has bothered to verify the background of this false accusation before taking any action.
We have nothing to do with the US-based hosting company, we didn't e-mail any of our users and no e-mail has gone through our server. (Oh, and here's the punch line: the newsletter mentioned above wasn't even spam, but that's another story...)
sxc.hu will hopefully be back online at the beginning of next week. We are very sorry for all the troubles this downtime may cause, and we are as frustrated with this situation as you are.

peter: just curious, have you talked to spamcop.net and elender about this false accusation? and why they didn't bother to do a background check? what was their reaction? if it's really their mistake you could undertake legal steps and get compensation. at least with your provider who pulled the plug. i sort of would be very very pissed if they would pull that one on me.

spam monitoring is great as an idea but when it does something like this it just proves that nobody will stop spam because of the cock ups that are made along the way.
I almost got shut down for sending an email to someone in my newsletter list that they subscribed to!
i really hate email now

ehm. that sucks. especially if someone voluntary subscribed. do you have an e-mail check or e-mail confirmation on that newsletter? i mean, can i fill in any e-mail address in? that's likely to be abused as well.
i sort of got lucky. dunno if you heard about it but there's a sort of new way of spamming where they hijack your domain. so they send shitloads of spam where the from address is a random name @ your domain . tld. i got about 1200 bounced e-mails back in 2 days. spam mails i didn't send which couldn't be delivered (that's how i found out). the thing is they used a lot of open smtp servers (especially .edu's) where relaying is allowed. and that is a problem as well. smtp servers should be blocked from relaying to force the spammer to use it's own smtp server which makes them more traceable. anyways, if some people who have reported it i prolly would have been on the ban list as well. but my isp is pretty cool they wouldn't pull the plug coz they would do a background check (e.g. checking the logs on their smtp server for abuse).
