common sense lou... do really need someone to explain it? there isn't a scientific field out there that doesn't use mathematics. A greater understanding of math contributes to advances in research and new advances in technology...
I'm no scientist, but it is pretty easy to make the connection.

well, without math, the pretty little mac you use wouldn't exist.
nor would design, architecture, engineering or any predominantly creative field - which relies on strcuture and numerical understanding.
math is inherit in life...patterns and order exist naturely in the universe.

that is why it is important. the more we understand about math, the closer to understanding what we are and how things exist we get.
