I've seen great examples of the 'Wood/Natural' style. I've seen great examples of the 'techno/abstract' style. I've even seen the 'Dropshadow' look done right.
All of these 'big thing' fads will come and go. All of them will have examples that work great (and some that suck). Any of these trends can work great if the underlining principles of design are met. As long as there is a reason and focus with the design, the style can change to suit the passing fancy just fine.

The next big thing is a perpetual "rip-off" engine. It basically uses flash to sample and assimilate websites into your own every hour. Giving it a fresh look.
