i was hoping he would have a photo of the rare native of new jersey j bird on his site...

It is what it is.
Judgement is futile if you consider that it is not presented as if Mr. Crane is attepting to prove himself in any way with regard to what he does. The photos are very honest and frank, no retouching, all blemishes present. No matter how I could try to pick it apart I won't because...again...
It is what it is.
Kudos.

for opinions such as this:
"I think the Flash is poorly executed and the photos lack inspiration."
that's fine, that's your opinion. good use of flash is not always determined by the wow factor, just as a persons success is not always determined by how much money they have.
i am a very detail-oriented person. as an artist, this shows in my work as most mediums i work with can display the highest definitions of detail. many years ago, being the type of artist i am, i would turn my nose to abstract paintings where it was obvious that the artist simply slung the paint on the canvas with little care as to where it landed. over the years i began seeing peices that i liked maybe because of the complimenting colors or because of the composition. then i realized, i don't dislike abstract art, i just like particular peices and dislike others.
as an artist, i have always done work that i liked. it didn't have to communicate a message to anyone else, nor did i have to create something that i thought others would accept. if someone thought my work was brilliant and liked it, great. if they thought it was pure sh*t, fine.
there is no definitive standard for calling yourself an artist, so questioning ones competance or the value of their work based on the amount of time spent on it, or just whether it appeals to you or not is absurd. if you don't like the work, that's great. but don't be offended if others do.

very good words.
ofcourse mr. Crane used Flash only just as a tool to present the pics as slides or with animation as he wished. the concept is key.
and the result is close to the concept. no clutter.
conceptual. art. perhaps.
still, like Mal said....
it is. there's no pretentious base to it.
it just is.
and i think it is wonderful to stare at.

It's not that I don't like the work. I like it for what it is, but I'm unsure why it garners as much attention as it does.
I'll be honest, I hadn't fully submerged myself in his site until a few hours ago, and since making my post I did find some photos that I really liked among his older works. Pieces that showed that he was a capable writer and photographer. I guess I'm just unsure what differentiates him from the thousands of other people who have similar places on the web.
While I am all for simple and minimal, I don't think the Flash work compliments his pieces in the least. In fact, I think it detracts from what he is showing. Sitting and waiting for a 4 meg file to load is an inconvenience. They could be broken into smaller, more user friendly bits. I guess the fuzzy fonts, simple Flash work coupled with poor navigation came off as amateur to me.
Bah...I don't know what I'm talking about.

Why care if the flash is poor?
The point is....
there is no point.
it-just-is.

interesting points, Kfresh.
"I like it for what it is, but I'm unsure why it garners as much attention as it does."
well, it does, so.. :)
"....Pieces that showed that he was a capable writer and photographer. "
although it is all very good, i don't think it is his intention to show off as a skilled writer or photographer, at least not in a technical kind of way..
"I guess I'm just unsure what differentiates him from the thousands of other people who have similar places on the web."
show me some.. ;)
"I guess the fuzzy fonts, simple Flash work coupled with poor navigation came off as amateur to me."
I think it is better to wonder what his intentions are. maybe this is not about design. not about user friendly file sizes.
"Bah...I don't know what I'm talking about."
don't say that. questioning is always good. i like this discussion! :)
btw..
who was that who said:
"If it lacks style it's minimalism?"
or something along those lines..

I maybe in the minority, but I don't really care for his work at all. I find a lot of repetitiveness and he's not really offering anything new.
There are lots of great links that are often omitted from NTB. I find it kind of weird his site gets posted so often.
I am not trying to be mean, I've looked at his work before and never really impressed me. It just reminds me of work that I often seen people do in high school.

I enjoy the whimsical minimalism.

In fact, I feel like throwing snowballs at the youth in the distance, and falling shallowly at the heals of my loves desire while trying to pretend that my kisses advance was only circumstance to the moment.
Ford wants in on the action.

Who's Ford? Is he your brother?

Erics brother or Jordan Crane?

I would have liked it better if he used Arial and bumped up the font size by 1 point.
There..i've critiqued someones work... I feel dirty...... ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED !!!!!!

read his words before bashing him off...

I thought the "Theoretical questions to a stranger" was very funny, and I think was by far the best thing on there.
He was asking the question to me (the stranger) which I could not answer, which made me laugh, it was unexpected, and then the answer posed more questions. Very enjoyable. The word things about his friends, I wasn't so keen on them. To introspective for my taste. Probably mean a lot to him, but not to me.
Not a big fan of portraiture, but the photos with the pink coat of arms on were nice, certainly sharp.
Yes, i think his stuff is very good.
