I was pretty unimpressed by most of the work this year to be honest. For the last few years I have been struggling to defend the turner but it seems to of become completely elitist (and far too expensive!), its one of the main problems with the current crop of modern art. The other one I feel is you need to be in the 'know' to appreciate it. it's all very clever but has little substance? I do find myself thinking the king has got no clothes on....
Compare any piece in the turner to the weather piece at Tate modern. That has to be one of the most amazing pieces of work I have seen in ages, not just for how it looks or the clever concept behind it but the reaction it has had with viewers.
It's a stunning sight made more so by how people react to it and become part of the piece.

unfortunately, many equate one individual's 'artistic' act with the entire spectrum of contemporary art.
this is the purpose of the turner prize: to give the relatively ignorant the illusion that they can have an opinion about contemporary art, a world about which they actually know nothing.

I think the turner prize is over-rated shite! Every year its something controversial, shocking, hyped - complete wank if you ask me.

Apparently everyone is entitled to judge an artists work following a sunday afternoon visit to the Tate Modern in between Starbucks and the matinee Disney. It is hilariously irritating to visit the Tate and see great work being sniggered at by idiots who decorate their gardens with clay gnomes and satellite dishes muttering "its not art is it?" and "I dont know much but I know what I like."
The Turner prize seems to be some kind of disinformation exercise that perpetuates the uninformed idea that all modern art is a load of old bollocks.
The Chapmans should have won just for the strength of the previous works.

The turner prize was set up to promote modern art and to get it noticed in mainstream culture.
I think it has very little to do with art and a lot more to do with getting people talking about modern art. I don't think artists give a toss about it, and look upon it as a media event, that raises the profile of what are, lets face it, unknowns in mainstream society.
Works the same as Murcury music award. Who the fuck was dizzy rascal before? The albums a piece of shit if you ask me, but they use it on the BBC as trailer music.
Hey it exists because eveyone talks about it. Remember kids the 'im best' priniple doesnt work in the arts, you cant make art for all the people all the time.
so if you dont like it, remember there is someone who does.
