I was picking up my GF this eve and had my powerbook with me. I arrived about 45 minutes early so while I waited I startup my powerbook and little do you know, while in my car I have a connection. Must have been the small house I was parked outside of. I drove around a bit to find other strong connections and there were more than I would have thought.
Does anyone else grab connections this way? I have heard of people doing it but I had no idea it would be so easy since it appears 50% of the homes and apartments have some kind of network rolling these days.

if you get really geaky about this than use this http://www.macstumbler.com/ with a certain gps device it will map it out for you.
i tend to find mostly linksys wifi setups because most people open the box and set it up unaware that it is completely open.

Is it legal? Or better said is it not really legal but nobody enforces this kind of activity?

I heard a story about some guy driving around naked from the waist down connecting to a wireless network and downloading kiddy porn.

I heard it isbut the only people held responsible are the ones who own the network. There really is no way to catch someone through wifi.

a friend of mine had the same thing
in his gf's appartement he could get online with his laptop
- chach0
just don't send any personal information through, they can see activity on the network same as a hard-line

I don't geek out too much with computers, but this is pretty cool. And the people with the wireless are none the wiser, most likely.

If you just turn on MAC filtering that should make it hard enough and force evil geeks to just keep driving.
Its possible to spoof a mac address but its not worth it for most people.
BTW a MAC address is like a serial # for your wifi card. If you tell your router to only communicate w/ your laptop it wont let others on your network.
