i wonder how much money those companies are really losing by a couple of people pirating their software. on the other hand most firms and edu's have to have proper licenses and that costs a lot, then the single users here and there. use until you can buy your own. i guess :)

i think there is a difference in using pirate software and ripping a site, you are not selling on the software like you are with a rip. but good comparison none the less

the biggest gripe i have with the Gimp it its horrid interface, and the gazillion separate windows it opens. As far as the features go, all it's really missing is CMYK support.

nope, never made it to pittsburgh. kinda happy about that now though, she turned out to be a flake :)

yes, Im sure the bigger companies benifit from students using pirate software, it gets them in young... kinda like giving a kid a credit card, once he overdraws, they have the kid for life.

cool

are you using that pirated software to develop client work? then you are doing exactly that.
the comparison stands. a site is used to communicate a brand. the ide you pirated is used to create that site to convey a brand.
you sell your services to a client just as your site sells your services to a client.

exactly, you kind of need to try it and realise you NEED it before you start paying big ££ for it. of course there are educational licenses though...
dont talk to me about student credit cards. just managed to pay the biggest one of mine off, first time in 2 years!

yey
- sexypixel0
but you are not claiming to be the 'creator' of the software, but i get your point.

in reality this argument will rage on. there will always be theft in the software industry.
in my opinion it comes down to maturity, professionalism and respect.
i believe in open-source. free or not, i don't like proprietary sofware...but i respect the developers enough not to steal their work and endanger their lively hood. just as i don't want to see something i worked on taken without my permission.
but, oh well...people rarely change in this area. somehow it can always be justified.
