shouldn't this:
_level0.gotoAndStop (54);make whatever SWF is in Level 0 (main timeline) go to frame 54 and stop??? am i doing something wrong?

the level? it's a zero. the level's are numbered 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9, etc. aren't they?

yes. it looks like it should make sense.
my suggestion is to make sure level0 is holding the right timeline.
or substitute _root. for _level0. and see if that changes anything.

yeah i've tried _root too.. and the timeline i'm going for the is the original, base movie. so it shoudl be on level0. i swear sometimes Flash does whatever it wants.

i'm trying to control the main timeline from an SWF that was loaded with LoadMovie. no other clips involved.

_root will reference the ROOT of whatever SWF you're calling the action from, you have to name the level if you want absolute levels. i would suggest using a frame label to be more specific, e.g. _level0.gotoAndStop("static");

when you loaded the seperate swf...did you load it onto another level?? or just load it?? cause if you didn't set it to a level then _level0 will be that swf...??

_root is the _root timeline of the main movie. not the loaded swf. if you you use _root out of a loaded swf you'll see that it calls to the main timeline. try it by calling the _root._currentframe on like frame 5 of the loaded swf, it won't disply 5, it'll display whatever frame the main timeline is on.
