I'm very new and doing a lesson from the Learning Maya book. They're having me draw along the grid in the side view (which I still think is impossible since it goes along the floor) I can't even get the grid to show in top or persp views. I tried Display>Grid. It's checked off already. I restarted the program.
Is the file corrupt? Should I be a carpenter instead? Am I doing something wrong?

I'll settle for this:
Is there a way to draw with the CV tool using grid snapping by holding down the x key? (without the inexplicably invisible grid)

I win!
I don't know if it's supposed to be hidden this badly, but if you go to Hotbox Controls>Windows>Window Options>Show Panel Menubars. You can go Show>Grid. You probably have the pane menubars showing to begin with.
It's better than Lightwave, but this program is overwhelming at first.

I haven't done it yet, but try modifying the Ramp Shader surface in the Hypershade.
I'm into the Sculpt Surfaces tool, also knows as the artesan display. You can "paint" on the object to affect it's shape. The recommend using a tablet, but in Maya you should be using a three button mouse. So, now I'm wondering if there is a mouse out there that is pressure sensitive. There should be. Sounds like a thread, by golly.

I guess you have the same book. I just got to that part and the eyeballs don't work. I tried every parameter in all the ramp, phong and all that stuff. I'm moving on.
