nah, the more amateur photographers (if you can even call many of the digi-youth that_) are only clotting up to form the next generation of the Moron Media Conglomerate

I just went to an all-digital studio last week; the guy uses a Mamiya RZ w/digital back; proofs on a laptop, color corrects 45mb files in PS and then prints right in his studio. Sweet. But he still uses film tons. hmm...

Both have their uses - digital is good for some things, especially when the final result is low-res. Film is the king for quality but as we all know, quality is o nly part of the equation when there are budgets and timelines.
There's no one answer - there's two options, use both for whatever is best for you needs. Why choose just one?
Actually I often take my SLR and Digicam to me when I'm taking product photos, nature landscapres, etc.... I click like crazy with the digital - take a few hundred pics, and use the SLR for those special shots.
OK - you can all forget this thread and go onto the next now ;)

nothing beats film, as mentioned before digi has lacks a special feeling

Film
and while we are on the same subject
Mac
To all the digital will surpass film in a few years arguements.
I will switch when it happens,For now my 6x7 eats digital cameras.
As a photographer we have to know the equipment and digital has it's advantages but higher quality is not one of them.

There's nothing like film...yet.

for the photographer purists...
does the development process still..
you know.. make you happy?
i remember in college we shared our graphics studio with the photo kids and they seemed to love to develop more than take the shots sometimes.
we had to take b/w and color classes with the photo students and the darkroom was always a circus

thats true... about the kids with digital cameras....
BUT there are kids with digicams that are producing some sick shit.... give them a HASSLEHOLF...lol ;)
and they might produce some ill shit.most of the tecniques that I use on my digi is duped on my 35 mm.
i use to digital for concept work mostly... and if i like what i get on the digital.. then i go and shoot it on analog.
now... some shots are spur of the moment, and cannot be recreated.. and for those you have to be at the right place right time....
iim inlove with my minolta.
i have a 70mm fisheye on that sucker, and mannnn its addictive.i guess it depends. for now, you cant beat the quality of film.
something about the quality and look of digital STLL isnt there....
and i dont know if it will ever be there...
:)

Yes chip you are right, is exactly the same thing that happens with the records-cds discussion.
Because of the sampling rate the cd is lower quality, and that its true, but on a record you get a sound that was not meant to be in the track. There is positives, and negatives, but choosing the old fashion way is just because of a personal attachment.Hey if you think digital cameras make every non photographer a photographer, Imagine what it will do to you.. a pro photographer..
Why only amateurs will improve?
Why cant you, the pro?
- Chip0
all depends on the lens I think.
For example, the Sony Cybershot DSC-F707 has a proper lens by Carl Zeiss, 5X f2~2.4, we have one in our office, its great.
This is the same discussion as CD vs Record Player.
Everyone always comes out with "Records are better, they have more feeling" or some shit like that. Same for film.
I say bollox.
Digital is the way forward...(I still like listening to my old scratched abba albums though...)
lol

hey steve, thanks for actually giving us some info on your process. it is good to hear from a seasoned professional vs. the point and shoot mock up my website crew. love your work.

Digital imagery will no doubt surpass photochemical imagery. It's only a matter of time.
- mrdobolina0
mimio, I think what these guys are saying is that without any post-production done to it, analog always looks deeper and better than an unadulterated digital image.
is that right?
- Mimio0
And I would agree with them. I was mostly commenting on Derek's remark about the future of digital images. To me, it's just easy to see that digital equipment will be able to do more and produce better quality in the future.

we should not give kids Hasselholf's. This world only gets one david hasselholf. And that's almost too much to handle. He sings ya know...
Give 'em a hasselblad. That would work better. but kinda pricey.
And on the subject of kids... Fuck yeah, that they all get to shoot. They all get to create. digital or analog. who cares.
you know why? because content is king.
which i'm sure, i'm hopefull this idea of content was brought up earlier in the 30-somthin other posts... it's just like those kids in forums debating the fucking Fstops on a nikon to a canon or the computer heads that don't buy a computer to make things with because they can't figure out if they should get the xxxmghz one now or wait for the rumored UBERbox coming in out in 1 month to 3 years, that was found on that site with that guy.
i want content. and the only way to get that content is people, lots of people getting off their asses with their disposable camera or their new wiz bang Canon Digital SLR and going out there and fucking making something that will bring about some emotion in me.
i want a world of creatives. i want a world where everyone has a camera. a paintbrush. a typewriter or a wacom tablet. where the thought process of - i want to be a stock broker so bad i can taste all of that coin and rich semen right now! doesn't happen.
Really. who wouldn't want more artists.
analog or digital still gets printed out on film paper. what matters is what's on that film paper. the content. god damn it's about the content and not the tool makin' it.
- tfs__mag0
tc_fisher is right... no more needs to be said.
- stoprev0
Mimio, true, it's all a matter of taste. I have a D10, it's great for some stuff, fashion... But it is still not where it should be, a few more years maybe. Digital is still a child, it needs to mature. I like the comsumer fuji superia 200 the best.
- Mimio0
Yes, but the thread is about two mediums, not whether content is more important than equipment. Nice sentiments, just the wrong thread.
- ribit0
"analog or digital still gets printed out on film paper"
Not neccessarily. What's so good about paper?
Save the trees.
- loudubs0
film beats all, proceed with pointless arguments
