well, I think its a little more than lip service outside the US anyway. As part of my masters I am working with a national industry development body (for the government). We basically work with a cross section of industry (from product development through to waste management) and help them improve their business practices and industrial processes and help them be more sustainable. You see, the EU have introduced strict legislation covering things like pollution and energy use and there are economic drivers (fines) in place that make sure business see an economic benefit to being environmentally friendly. They are also introducing things like carbon takes that will aim to reduce greenhouse emissions etc from transport and industry.
Since the ratification of Kyoto there has been a massive drive towards renewable energy etc. Many european industries are looking to the future oil and energy crisis and are trying hard to be less dependant on the remaining oil that currently lies unstable regions and which will increase in price in the coming years.
And its not true that all countries increased their emissions. e.g. The UK actually lowered their CO2 emissions and have carbon credits that they can sell to other countries under the emissions trading scheme.

geeze, is this still going on? I would tend to agree with vena.... on kyoto and this adbusters crap. it's a gimmick to make a few people sleep better at night that doesn't really do a damn bit of good towards the real problem. try not to be fooled so easily.

maybe try not let your ill-informed cynicism let you fall in with the sublime mass (read Slavoj Zizek for a clue to what that means). If you dont understand whats going on or if you just dont want to understand fair enough but dont presume you can knock it down with a non-statement like that. try not to BE a fool so easily.

Ummm lowimpakt, you're the only one that is trying desperately to make a "statement". I merely said I tended to agree with Vena. Quoting something from an author that most people have never heard of makes it seem to me that you aren't forming your own opinion of a situation either. I would say that I'm probably not as well read, or informed as you on this matter. That DOESN'T mean that I'm part of some "sublime mass".
Lastly, my statement about "don't be fooled so easily" was directed at people in general. It's so easy to take one side or another on an issue and never really develop your own opinion on it. Both sides of an issue are usually as guilty as the other. I would say that your "sublime mass" are the group of people that could give a shit and would go on acting like there was no problem. But look at me, I've brought myself down to classifying and generalizing again.
I'm done with this, but I'm sure this won't be the end. Don't expect anymore posts from me on this subject.
