Boz... there are major problems with your price comparisons between your AMD Priced Machine and the G5. First off you compare a single 1.6Mhz 64-bit processor against Dual 1.8Mhz 64-bit processor... you can add a grand there if there were such a thing for the PC. Were not even talking yet about the Dual independent 1GHz frontside buses that just can't compare.
19 CRT versus a 17 Studio Display??? You are really stretching it there. Apples and oranges and you can use the CRT monitors on your Mac so that shouldn't even be a price comparison.
Memory... Apple memory is a bit expensive, but you can grab memory from Memory X or Crucial just as cheap as PC memory.
You also didn't cost how much it would take to add 802.11 B and G wireless card, built-in Bluetooth, Firewire 800 and 400 cards, USB 2.0 cards.
Hard Drive space is another cost that you don't have to buy directly from Apple. Save big bucks there. Plus if you buy a Mac now you get a rebate on Firewire external hard drives which are nice.
I haven't even talked about the Apps that you get for free, the OS cost, the better design, the quieter machine. The killer keyboard, speakers, etc... I'm sorry Boz, but you break even if not loose.
The PC does win though if you want to go bargain PC shopping... Apple doesn't really compete in that market because they have their iMacs with built-in screens for that share of the market.

i'd love to set up a mac vs pc forum specially for all you guys.
please, its getting old, change the record

i also want to start a forum for people who constantly complain about PC/Mac debates/talks. It's quite simple... skip thread!

it kind of hard when ever second one is about your crappy operating system brags, wow, youre great, you have a shinny new computer, go and play with it and stop your bragging

Sorry wrong thread

I also want to start a forum, but I want it to be about 50 Cent. I mean, dude, he got shot 9 times. Something needs to be said.

the guy said he wanted a Mac but thought it was too expensive. i wanted to dispell myths that you have to buy all things pertaining to a Mac through Apple. You can buy different brands of memory, hard drives, monitors, etc. that cut costs.
I wasn't saying that a Mac was better than a PC. I was saying that his comparison is faulty.

I bet he was never shot... I bet he's a faker. He's probably some white guy from the burbs.

ok sorry, so maybe keep it in the thread below. its panther city in here today

STB,
I think you are wrong. First off all AMD Athlon 64 FX 51 and Dual G5 just had a test run in the latest PC magazine. I read similar tests in another Mac oriented magazine and FX51 wins. The FSB is faster it works at 1.6 Ghz in contrast to G5s 1Ghz and it has twice the L2 cache. Of course that's less then G5s 2Ghz for both, but that's not cruicial for performance since none of the components can sustain that speed. Second, FX51 is a 2.2Ghz CPU and Athlon 64 (his smaller brother) works at 2Ghz. There is a dual configuration for PC with Opteron CPUs which run at 1.8Ghz and one costs around 10 bucks less then a single FX51, so I would have to add another $800 for a second one, but G5s couldn't even compare to that machine. Third, as I mentioned 19" CRTs are much better then any LCD no matter Apple or not, and they are my personal favorites, but I also made a comparison with 173T Samsung kick-ass displays that are the same quality as Apple LCDs and even more you can rotate the display 180 degrees to watch a portrait pages or whatever. (http://www.uniquent.com/compari... Fourth, New ASUS boards come equipped with Firewire and USB 2.0 ports so these PCs have that as well and more (http://usa.asus.com/products/mb... If you want to actually totally compare, Ati All-in-Wonder card with 128 mb has more features with video then worse ATI card in Macs. Don't forget SATA RAID support that will blow away anything in RAID 0 mode.
Fifth, there's plenty software out there, but the ones we actually need are the same for both and we need to buy them. Don't forget free alternatives like Open Office and so on.
Sixth, Killer keyboard and killer speakers do not come with the Apple, just the regular keyboard and one button mouse. You have to buy proper speakers to get some quality, those small ones are just shitty. Logitech Cordless MX Duo is said to be the best keyboard and mouse in the world (radio wireless and they work amazing). True Apple has the wireless, and it costs $69 each, which adds almost $200 to the price tag. You should try MX duo you might like it, no wonder I see more and more people using them on Macs.

I'm sorry Boz, but after that last post are you still switching? I'm confused... You want a Mac but you think the PC is a better machine? Just wondering.
I've tried to build a Dell that's "comparable" to a G5 Dual 2Ghz and it always comes out almost the same price. I know I would save money building my own but I can't be bothered.
I need a PC to add to my shop but for the same price I think I'll upgrade to a new G5.

Well krts, to tell you the truth I just like the style of Macs, like how smooth OS works for everyday task and stuff. I love how they look and I was swept away when I saw new Panther. I can't deny that Apple has that personal feel to their computers and operating systems. The actual technology is on the PC side which is normal because of the wide spread of PCs. Apple has some tricks, true, and G5s are far from dissapointment, they work great. My point was just that it takes waaaay to much money to go from top of the line PCs to top of the line Macs that's all. As I mentioned in the switching thread, I'm definitely getting a Mac, but it's probably gonna be something cheaper, like G4s or maybe a Powerbook.

boz, sounds you are sure! if you ever have a mac problem, use the magic sign // to get me in that thread!

Thanks. I agree with most of what you said. I just find the price difference a non-factor.
Many PC's that I've used in freelance work were so fast with AE. I need that. But the price of those machines was almost exactly the same for a "comparable" Mac.
I'm just stuck that's all and it's interesting to hear your (and others) thoughts since you are a PC user getting a Mac while my shop uses Mac and needs a PC
:)

krts,
you see the issue here is that it's hard to switch 'now' because the PCs have really good technology now. It wasn't like that last year, but now it's definitely different. Here, look at the PCs I can buy/build now as oppose to G5s. Let me tell you I tried both and PCs just feel faster now. As for the price, here judge for yourself:

I can tell you that I'm getting that first FX51 configuration with CRTs very soon since I need to replace my main workstation now. Believe me when I tell you that I tried both and both FX51 PC and Dual G5s work almost the same with slight advantage to PC because of the WD Raptor drives that spin at 10k and work in RAID mode. The next thing would be G4s or something or a Powerbook.
- krts0
I see that. That system looks great. The only problem is the flat panels. I wouldn't buy 'em. The CRT's are to good of a price so I know that would knock down the Mac price (not by much, I know).
And that PC is a single processor? Is that the same as a Dual Mac in speed? How does a single chip compare to a dual?

Here's where you can find some good Mac deals.
