Does OSX come with a built in firewall? Anything I must do to activate it?
- kpl0
yes. and,
yes. There's this button in System Preferences called "Turn on Firewall"
- Mimio0
Use the "help" menu on your system. It's full of knowledge.
- canadian0
thank you kpl.
mimo i dont need to search like that because there exists some people on NT who don't mind helping for shortcuts. go get a life.
- dehryll0
more specifically. the magic button is in the "sharing" control panel inside of system preferences
- bodega0
yeah or you could get a firewall interface like brickhouse or firewalkX with more options etc. if you don't want to fuck anything up. (i recommend firewalk).
- dehryll0
wow Canadian.
who pissed in your cheerios this morning?
- canadian0
i dont know. i get angry when people direct questions to google and help files.
thank you to everyone else that felt like helping. it can be like pulling teeth around here sometimes.
If the OSX internal firewall is now active can I assume it is safe to install Photoshop without any reports flying out of this computer?
- mrdobolina0
shiver me timbers, if the firewall is working, it should alert you before allowing photoshop to access the internet, aaarrrr
ya little pirate!
- canadian0
I see. thank you mrdobolina. anyway of testing before hand?
- ribit0
what port would Photoshop be using for that? I would have thought the firewall wouldnt have stopped that sort of thing?
- ribit0
and why do you care if Photoshop is doing something...huuuhhh?
- canadian0
I dont understand. Excuse my ignorance but if I have PS stuffed and ready to install (havent yet) and now I have activated the firewall protection that OSX comes with i think I am ready to install. Right? I was wondering if there is a way to test it before just incase.
- sparker0
it won't. firewalls control inbound/outbound packets...if it's not configured properlly it won't do anything.
the defualts may work, but i doubt it. plus, if the adobe developer was even somewhat intelligent, then he/she would have used a port that isn't regularly set for exclusion in defaul firewall configs.
this is another reason why people should learn to just read the fucking manual.

Calm down Candian,
You fill the board with your ignorant software pirating questions. Pardon me if I feel like giving you a little crap about it. Your cheapness is only eclipsed by your laziness.
- ribit0
what does Photoshop do?... cmon I want to knowwww..
- canadian-1
Oh come on now Mimo. Stop it. If I was to purchase every program I would be more broke than I am now. FlashMX + PS + Ill is worth thousands. Stop acting like you have purchased all your software, fonts and music.
So how do you all deal with the firewall issue when you need to install?
- mrdobolina0
my firewall asks me if whatever program can have access to the internet before allowing it. not port #'s. Im on a pc, mind you.
- Mimio0
All of my software is legit. I spend about $800-$1000 a year upgrading, it's built into my budget. Obviously I can't afford to upgrade every time a new version is available, but I don't really need Illustrator 10 or Photoshop 7.
- sparker0
I DO buy all my software. Or use Linux/Unix and open-source alternatives.
Welcome to the fucking professional world. If you use that for client work, then you're not only fucking the hardworking developers and the companies providing that software you rely so heavily on, but you will end up fucking yourself. The ISP in our town was forced to pay over 200K due to illegally licensed software, and they're a small mom-and-pop operation.
Lets see, not only are you too lazy to look up your own answers to simple questions, but you want them so you can illegally use a professional application...what, do you want someone to configure your firewall for you, too? how about someone to hold your hand while you take a piss?
I'm sorry I started to help.
Kid.

weel than the two of you ar better than me. I suupose this thread is not for you. Move along.
