nice one bio. I've made a few billboards but haven't ever bothered with that stuff. Hmmm.

i remember that. Which did you do in the end?

Thanks Bio. I created the "santa fell off the sleigh" out of frustration but after the response I got from friends, I thought it should be considered...outrageous? a little. unPC? absolutely! It would have gotten alot of publicity but, NO...lets go for the safe, non-concept billboard...which is what we did with the tagline: ...tis the season!
yawn. I wanna live on the beach and sell hotdogs.

I made one for clearchannel (TN) a few months ago.

i'll live on that beach with you and sell lemonade.
for lunch, you can have some lemonade if i can have a hotdog.

100 dpi at fullscale?
that's a bit of overkill unless you are talking about smaller "billboards" made for up-close viewing like a 5'x10'
then 100dpi would be fine.
but not for a 14'x48' or larger.not to sound arguemenative or anything.

ah, Bio...now you're talking utopian society with bartering replacing currency. I like.
I'm ready to move to St. George Island anyway...and its too conservative right now so between you and me, we could shake that place up!

I'll swap you both a hotdog and some lemoade for the pleasure of you both keeping your kneecaps ;)
Back to the feudal system i say.

so I'm designing a billboard right now that will be 31' x 21'...so I can safely design it at 31"x21" 300dpi and it will be fine, according to a previous Bio post?
It will hang on the side of a building

Jman, if you have any doubts, you can always call your printer and ask what ppi they will be printing at.
300 dpi (most printers refer to as ppi which is technically more correct than saying dpi - but we wont get into that. heheh) is pretty safe when working at 1:12 scale. but you might wanna check and see what the viewing distance is. this is important to know and can make a difference in what res you should use.
your printer will be able to tell you everything you need to know. (we hope haha.)
but with the details youve given, i would think that it would be fine. if you have any doubts, then bump it up some. you can always decrease your dpi. . . =)

thanks Bio, I think it will be fine, as it will mainly be viewed from drivers (about 100 ft. away)
