sexypixel,
now that I look again, they could have made the content bleed off the bottom of the screen, some of those pages are really long - why confine them to that tiny window.
point taken.

I just think that big huge corporations should be putting out better stuff. They have the money to push this medium forward but end up churning out functional but awful looking shite.

Agreed.
They should do better.
In the meantime, I would rather see average design with good IA than great looking design with no way of finding anything.
We have to remember that the other 99.99999 % of the population do not know what to click... I constantly try and stop myself falling into the trap of designing stuff that other designers would like. How wrong that is...

When working with those big companies with tons of capital to push the envelope in web design,
you must remember to consider how large these companies really are, and what problems the design answers. HP is a fortune 100 company with a global audience, with a homepage viewed 2 million times per day, with a navigation and heirarchy system that is translated to 32 languages. When structuring a design within this realm, pushing the envelope does not come as easy as you would imagine. Several very important design solutions were achieved
within these parameters which benefited HP tremendously. And not all of those solutions may appear to push the boundaries.

Here a few interactive examples of how HP is bringing its offline advertising online.
The partners + hp campaign:

I dont know whats wrong with the HP site. Aside from some spacing issues its a pretty nice site. Maybe they just updated their site i know the one before this was pretty hideous. The shell site is awful though on every level.

Nice comments reagan.
Personally, I think these people got the mix of design and functionality just right:
http://www.samsung.comThe other big ones who are usually doing something good are the pharmaceuticals companies, such as Novartis etc...
http://www.novartis.com/
glaxo
http://www.gsk.com
etc...I recently did a pitch to re-design NEC.com, they decided not to re-design eventually so we did only a flash navigation which you can see on the current nec.com site.
However, heres my pitch work.
Any thoughts appreciated nevertheless:
