did you guys hear about this? some guy stole the sorce code for the engine! this shit is fucked up!
- toastie0
yup.
HL2 is now opensource. bwahahahahahahahaaha.
- jevad0
thats not funny - it's fucking lame....
- smek20
i dont think half life 2 is fucked up or open source now, for it needs more than just the source codes to entertain me.
like the scripts, the music the textures, game models, sound effects, the whole level design etc.
as i understand it, only the source codes, not the whole game leaked to the internet, right?
but it is a pity for valves effort to develop the source-engine.

freakin geeks

" dont think half life 2 is fucked up or open source now, for it needs more than just the source codes to entertain me."
let me give you another perspective here. if you've ever played counterstrike or quake or battlefield 1942, etc online, i'm sure you are quite aware of the thousands of hacks in existance to allow users to cheat with wall hacks and the like. these were created, mind you, without the original source code of the game. how much more vulnerable would hl2 be if it were in the hands of these cheaters??
when you play where cheaters have an unfair advantage, the fun isn't there anymore and less people play. this could be a problem for valve, who has been working on hl2 since 1998 and would probably like to earn a return on their efforts...i hope they catch the guy who got access to their code before it's leaked out. for valves sake as well as for the people who buy the game.

Well said Mitsu, well said.
- jevad0
word mitsu - but man - a company like valve should ahve INSANE security - and this has proven they don't...crazy...
- fugged0
With the hype that new games get, I think any company is going to be at risk for this sort of thing. High tech or low tech. I remember seeing messages about Doom III getting leaked because someone at ATI leaked an alpha.
- WildPony0
man thats a bummer. they should have kept those source files in their black mesa operation center surounded by crowbar wielding scientists.
- mitsu0
heh WildPony... you funny long time.
- hiphoprelic0
I'm with you mitsu
CS cheaters can eat a dick.On the other hand, maybe this will allow for some nice third party development. i.e. cstrike.
- Bullitt0
Its all a bit Jurasic Park.

Sounds like good publicity too though... I'd never heard of it before
- Bio0
that is shitty.

the "source" would only be missing a few files, sound, etc.. the source is capable of compiling other files needed like texures models if they werent taken.
but....
articles are saying the "file tree" was taken, which means they got the whole thing and more.
shitty thing to do.
- bmehalo0
let me get this straight-- this means basically anyone with programming ability and these codes can build their "own" version of the game?
- ER0
no, this means anyone who downloads the files can play the game. its said that they took the file tree so that would mean all the directories are already assembled.
- bmehalo0
very fucked up - i'd give em the chair. but i'm not sure why this doesn't sit well with me, though i download music like a bastard.
- mitsu0
"this means basically anyone with programming ability and these codes can build their "own" version of the game?
yes, that's correct.
"its said that they took the file tree so that would mean all the directories are already assembled"
no, a friend downloaded the source last night and found everything intact minus of course the resources themselves. all the source code was there including the custom-built physics engine that powered the demo at the last e3 showing.

Valve was apparently hacked through Outlook. What is so lame is that the patch for this kind of intrusion has been available from Microsoft for a year. A FRIGGIN YEAR.
but this is incredibly lame and must bring the developers to tears.
