i used it about 2 years ago to test out some php stuff with apache on redhat 7...
worked well... for an emulator it wasn't that slow really... it runs x86 code on an x86 proc though so it's gonna be faster than other emulators and stuff (ie: VPC for mac which runs x86 code on a powerpc proc = not native at all = why it runs so slow).worked well.. everything was supported... not a direct replacement for a real computer IMO... pc parts are cheap now so it almost pays to build another one instead....
good thing though, if you f*ck up an install you can just drag the virtual hard drive to the trash and start over... also you can suspend your session so you never have to reboot your virtual computer, just open a saved session.

The company i work for uses it quite a bit. im not a technical guy, so i couldnt explain it much, but i know its valuable.

Basically, it's great. Just make sure you have plenty of RAM. I'd say 512M minimum.

I despise vmware! Slow and so boring and tedious to test a large site -- every single page on every stupid browsers/OS installed.
Not only is it a mind-numbingly boring chore, the computer is super slow and Notepad/Word/PShop/Paint doesn't exist in each OS so I had to list all the website errors with pen and paper. Anyhow, had to rant.

i highly reccommend it for a single setup (like a linux server on a win desktop) which is how i've been using it on my trip, and it's worked like a dream. You'll definitely want a beefy box for it as well.
I can see how it would be incredibly tedious for multiple setups though.
