Going to Japan in a month, wondering if anyone had any design related points of interest or even general points of interests that I should check out while I'm there. Thanks for the input!

yikes!
that's a big question.what part of the country will you be visiting?
how long do you have?
shrines and temples, or pop culture?

people.
Japanese people.
lots.

those paper-like ultra thin walls they have, you're supposed to slide them, not walk through them.
- jox0
just searched for some japanese stuff and came across this
http://www.doyouspeakmartien.com…
kinda neat! :)

Tamabi, one of the biggest art university here, is going to have a big exhibition next month.
The stuff coming from there is probably the most fun and interesting I've come across in Japan. Wanna come along?

Try to visit Kyoto -- it has a lot of temples, castles and neat sights. The hotel in Kyoto I was staying at had English-speaking tours taking us to different places. Ask the hotel receptionist or something. Also, bring a camera.

"Also, bring a camera"
...might be a good idea.
Also, if you're in Tokyo, check out the "european bar and dining" on the top floor of Parco 1 (in Shibuya). The interior are characterised by two things:
1. the walls are padded like a mental asylum
2. Most of the stuff is in pink and blank....what, you never been to a eauropean bar before?

I heard Japanese hate the americans. I had a friend go over there and walk into a bar, right past a "No americans" sign he could not read.
The bartender pulls out a shotgun and holds it to my mates head while screaming, so he just slowly walks out.
I figured I'd be "Big Howdy Cowboy Giant Caucasian God" over there...and get all the sailor skirt wearin' hotties

"I figured I'd be "Big Howdy Cowboy Giant Caucasian God" over there...and get all the sailor skirt wearin' hotties "
You mean, you come to fuck girls that are still in elementary school? Because you consider yourself that hot? Perhaps that attitude got you and in trouble?
...just a thought...

Getting back to the thread:
"Village Vanguard" in Kichijoji specializes in designer toys and goods

Just to clarify, that was completely a joke on the last statement. I'm sorry it wasn't apparent to some. The major japanese stereotypes is of Girls Wearing Sailor Uniforms and those trying to imitate cowboys. There are many anime series with western themes and even more with "Short skirt girls" themes. Sorry you couldn't see the blatent stereotype
A FRIEND of mine had the bar episode happen to him.
- chokethefat0
I agree with peterH...i read an article about what happened..that's fucked up...should be ashamed...
- spartahkus0
ohh..i've seen those "No americans" signs in many places around the world actually....
wonder y huh??
- fate0
Because we're all arrogant school girl raping cowboys?
just a thought...
- Peter0
Actually, there are tons of people coming here thinking they'll be "gods" as stated.
Glad you're not one of them.About anime series, I wouldn't judge a real population from a cartoon. But supposebly there are a lot of teenagers in cartoons, since a majority of animes are aimed for that crowd. Never seen any in which a school girl impersonates a cowboy though. But didn't you write that it was you who wanted to be a cowboy?
Anyways, sorry to see you have that vision making up your Japanese stereotype.
About that bar, I question the gun a lot since it is strictly prohibited - everywhere. A bar owner might just ask you to leave, that's a lot more simpler and more effective in the long run. But then again, that's your story. He might have just dueled your cowboy friend for a one on one shootout.

Peter, peter, peter. Let me make it a little more clear for you.
I WAS JOKING. I took what I thought to be a wildy known stereotype, NOT MY OWN, and acted as if they were my own ideals. I even explained the source of that mass stereotype
Try understanding and not just reading next time, Peter
- Chip0
Peter, whens the Tamabi thing?
I wouldn't mind going along.
- spartahkus0
been to the states, n I have seen barmen with guns..real 'cowboys'...an ego as big as their heads...
yeah mate.. u cant judge a real whole population on fictional, cartoon stuff...
cos i did the same after watching 'scream' or 'urban legends' and 'dude where's my car' well.... something's not right hey..anyway..
- fate0
This is the last time I'll say it. It was a joke. It was a stereotype, a mass one known in many countries through most peoples limited exposure to Japanese society. If you took me seriously, then you're a very literal and uncreative person.
