... that's why i quit design long time ago (although i still hand around this site). Sure i do a project from time to time for some quick cash but other than that i have a bit higer ambitions.
Now days i try to tell stories (with my camera) as often as i can... So why do i want to make movies?
Yeah, (besides stories) for fame, foretune and tons of attractive ladies.

it sure beats real work...

one lesson i learned in life is this: if you start questioning your career, you have chosen the wrong road. That's why the average McDonalds'er only work 3 weeks before moving on. (not that i would know)

Why Design? It's a job. You have to work to live kid, be it at any which job. And this job is the only one I can. That's why I design.

we're lucky enough to even be able to think that there may be some 'art' in our work, most people just do their daily drudge and thats their lot..
wow, that first sentence sucks!

i'm in art and design because i feel like i'm wasting my life unless i'm making something beautiful.
plus sitting back and looking at a piece you just finished after working weeks on it is a very, very, pleasurable and satisfying feeling.
better than drugs.

scarabin has the best answer:
"i'm in art and design because i feel like i'm wasting my life unless i'm making something beautiful"c_roc, if you're in design to be a celebrity, you're in it for the wrong reasons. And you don't have to be the stereotype you painted. Those people are a dime a dozen.
Stop caring what others think and do what makes you happy.

C_roc, I like a good rand, so props. I think the answer is you design because you must. It's part of what you do all day or it's not. I freakin design my toast and jam it seems ... I just see visual relationships all day and I can't think of anything I'd enjoy more than making a living working them out. I don't separate different types of design much, and I've helped start a firm that does a pretty broad range. Being a fine artist or musician (I've done those too) just means you kick off the project with your own parameters but there's a similar set of issues, budget worries, etc. Do what you have to do ... if you can bear not doing it than find something else. It's like falling in love, no? It's got to hurt to be away from it or it's not the real thing for you.

err .. I do like a good Rand, but I meant *rant* ... posting without proofing, my bad.

why not design?
Surely a true designer seeks only to improve the communication between human beings.
Re-evalute what a designer's role in society is before you start questionning their existance.
If you want to create debate and draw attention to yourself sit in a perspex box for 44 days and 44 nights...
- jaybee0
dude, if that's what you think about design, fucking QUIT.
- scarabin0
seriously though; if you got into design to become famous, you've wasted your life.

i do it cause i got nothing better to do
but i am not a designer
