I was told by the client to make a site for their church that didn't at all resemble a "church site."
Did I succeed?
- Bluejam0
Yes.
But IMO you're gonna totally baffle 'em with the navigation. When you bring in the second level nav you lose it once clicked and have to get back via the first level nav again...could get tedious even the religious who might pray for the wrath of God on yer 'ead. I also woulda gone for crosses (a la HP) instead of circles but they look good 'enuff.
Good job.
And peace be with you.
Amen.

Oh yeah. Definitely doesn't look like any church site I've seen. I wonder if your client will think its too prince of darkness though. Also think the subnav is a little confusing and perhaps too busy? Otherwise, it looks great. Like how you did the photos alot.

you succeeded. but now they will change their minds. . .
and word on the nav thing.

Bitchin. It's amazing what a business religion is.
Did you do it for free?
- db0
1.) much appriciate the feedback so far.
2.) Didn't do it for free. I gave them a pretty good deal though (under $5,000)
3.) about the cross idea. I don' t think so, that's exaclty what you'd expect a church to do.
4. ) The nav comments are well recieved, but I and the client don't really have a problem with it.

Maybe some dripping blood from the cross. Christians love the graphicness of the crucifixtion.
- Bluejam0
more like...
"It's amazing what a religion business is. "
The name of Nike™, Gap™ and the Holy McDonalds®. Visa.

"4. ) The nav comments are well recieved, but I and the client don't really have a problem with it. "
What about the target audience?
You made it and the client has been made aware of it...you're both biased towards understanding how it works.I'd seriously rethink.

i concur. you have a nav problem.

Man, I don't know about you, but the chuch near my high school is redoing their building for like $80 million or some ridiculous amount. How?!
Anyway, like the site. Very nice Works well for the most part, but the nav is a bit of a bitch.

what's the signifigance of the circular designs?
and why does the nav hide it self slowly after selecting something?
It shouldn't dodge and move out of the way.It sounds to me like you're justifying an obvious design problem with the fact you don't think it's a problem.
We're telling you, it is.
Even if people SAY they like it - you can watch their mouse move and seem . . . confused and unsure where to click.
I mean, something moved in - they said "oh, ok"
and then it runs away from them and they have to bring it backyou're doubling the amount of clicks it takes to navigate and doubling users frustrations.
How can I tell where I am?
come on man . . .

I dont mind how fresh looking it is.. and i dont mind the nav...
what i do agree with is the darkness of it.. i would go with a Lighter pallette... it does look more like a Prince of Darkness Band site... and the whole color scheme and logo Clash...
maybe it would be as simple as using white instead of black in the black areas...
also... loose the intro or integrate it into the first main page..... Skip intros are lame... and if you want an intro show the navigation while its playing up top.... then it will feel like an integrated intro... and not an annoying step to get past
- db0
i hate intros too. i made it as short as possbile. i already talked them out of music playing in the background and a few other things so i had to give in to their request for an intro though.
As fo rthe dakr pallette, like i said they wanted a site that absoluetly didn't lok anythig like a church site. They said they would would rather it look like Eminem's site than a church site.

http://www.marshillchurch.org is a great church site.

Site is Awesome, a little grungy to me but its all good.. the nav is awesome (except if jacob Neilsen visit the site). I go to a church that is mostly attented by the youth of today. most are grungy, punk looking , but tht their style right now, so, if the church has kids like that , then you have attained your goal.. :)
