like many modernist designs, helvetica (aka neue haas grotesk) ends up doing the opposite of what it was intended to doÐit is decorative.
Modernists believed that simpler, more geometric and san-serif typeface were easier to read. Studies of perception show that actually the the more the letters look like each other, the harder it is to read. hence, serif typeface such as times are often more legible . That's also why pixel fonts are usually hard to read (fashionable or not). combinations like ilh iln mn become very confusing in helveticaÐthere's just not enough difference. Having said thatÐstill think it's beautiful.
