i'd say start by touring one of your local printers and ask a lot of questions. be sure to spend a little time in the prepress area. those are the people that get our files ready for press...

what is a hielelwhat???

a heidelburg is a printing press
see the white things leaning on the press.. those are the plates that go in those areas. plates are made from separations of your artwork (CMYK). there is a plate for each of the four colors. and at the end of the press comes out your full color image.
almost forgot. allways convert your art to cmyk before you send it to print

You may want to hold off on the Heidelberg and do what BonSeff says.
Also - while you're at the printer, ask if they have any samples with tips and instructions on how to design for print. I have a few good ones for using varnishes and some for printing on uncoated stock, etc.
Printers are usually very helpful. When I first started, I tried to act like I knew everything... but even the sales reps could see I needed some guidance. So they started bringing over samples and guides.

learn about colour trapping, screen angles, spot and process colours.
you might even want to invest in a few pantone swatches to save yourself from on screen mistakes.
ok bye bye
