I propose that only people who have gotten a board rash, surfed at dawn, surfed at night, used duct tape to patch a ding, and know what Sex Wax is for are allowed to comment on the photo.

That's totally Teahupoo in Tahiti.
What you're looking at is a shot taken from the channel where you have to paddle out if you don't want to be made into hamburger. I've seen others (in mags) taken from a similar angle. It just looks really extreme because of the angle and the lens used for the shot.
The regularity of the break allows you to pull a boat or a ski or yourself up to that spot, and you can just chill until you want to paddle into the action.
It's a thick ass fuckin' wave, and even the best surfers in the world speak of it with serious respect (aka fear).
Hamilton is riding a monster in that video. He's an absolute maniac.
Just saw "Step Into Liquid" the other day. A classic surf flick which includes (among other great stories), a sequence where Hamilton and the Maverick's Crew ride out 100 miles offshore to the Cortez Bank in SoCal, to tow-in surf 60+ foot ground swells in the open ocean.
They also ride a modified hydrofoil surfboard that hovers 2 feet above the water. THAT'S the thing you'll never believe is real. Looks impossible, even though you're seeing it for your own eyes right there on the big screen.
You want your head to explode? Check this out:

I wish I could find a vidclip of that...

Well, Nirvous luckly you're not in charge. Otherwise all the dope stuff I posted wouldn't be in this thread.
Here is a clip from the movie in question. Higher res than the rest , with sick big wave riding and the man himself breaking off some thoughts.

Sorry. Even though I don't surf I love surfing. I never get tired of watching my friends or videos. It's a beautiful thing.

Whoa. The last part of the laird.mov shows the lip of the wave. It looks almost 8 feet thick! Nice find.

I read an article last year a local boy tried to surf it when it was pretty big. He got slammed on the reef and got basically ripped in half. Liam Mcnamarra a well know big wave rider from Hawaii, was the one who tried to save the kid. I'll try and find that article.
That wave is real and scary as shit. Some day I have got to see for myself.
