if you can beat the laws of nature, then it's possible.
Looks like so much fun though!

I wouldn't have thought so in that context - I mean, in the immediate stages before a tsunami hits the mainland you may get a strong enough backwash to create that effect, but then I'd like to suppose the surfers would have greater things to worry about than catching a totally bodacious tube.
It is a fricking awesome image though...

I have this was a rare phenomenon where there is a river or reef nearby that was filling at the same time a hug wave was coming in making this unbewlievable image. There is some explanation for it.

Hmmm.... I don't think so. Look how calm these people look, even though they're seeing death in front of them. Then they're on top of it, really on the edge of the water cliff... and for such a terrible event, some of them are not even looking to it. Oh, problably because I did some surf, and hang with some of some surfer friends, these guys somehow don't look like they're big wave surfers.
One more thing. Those orange floating things are usually close to the shore. Wich is not the case.
Great picture, though...

the surfer dude from brazil next to me says no way. the orange floats are a dead give away

no way i saw this on the news - a scientist was giving a whole explanation of it - i swear ...

yes - that break is in tahiti and is renound for that!
- JazX0
sure why not? just a wave, but I would get outta' that water if I were those people.
- surfito0
the break is called teahupo (not sure if its spelled correctly) and its probably the heaviest wave out there.
- jevad0
thats the one!
and that's a SMALL day!
hahahahah

thats what happen when a decent wave thats been travelling in deep water suddenly hits shallow water over a reef.
The guys look calm because reef breaks are consistent and usually have nice channels so you can paddle out in large surf without getting your hair wet.
great photo, I weouldn't like to try duck diving that fucker, instant washing machine death.

Video from a small (?!) day:

Awaiting official verification from Surfer magazine ...

come on - it's a real break already!
- 4cY0
this could very well be real, it's the reefs that can make it break in the utmost bizarre ways..
dangerous shit, tho.

I've been there in a dream.

I worked on a video game called Kelly Slater's Pro surfer and had to research that place and build the level. It's real all right.
For the most spectacular footage of it see the "Laird" dvd. Laird Hamilton rode the sucker on a big day and it's breath-taking.
