got a client who wants a web site but has no logo for her company yet. after quoting for developing logotype/identity, she wants to build web site and *then* consider creating logo.
??makes no sense to me??
anyone else ever have to build a company web site without a logo or identity to build from? any advice? like do i just type her company name in times in the top left corner something??
thanks

...or they get someone else to do the logo... and try and stick the two together at the end.... agggh!

Make a very simple logo for the website but not for her company.
Don't charge for it.
Make it a GIF in very limited colours.
The website will look fine but her company will still not have a logo.

did you try explaining the issues here in an unpatronising way, and be sure to make her think that it was her idea that this may not work.

The client wouldnt happen to be EDR - a freelance writer from London would it?
It's not worth you worrying about if the company is too short sighted and tight to realise that a web site (and eventually the business) is going to fail unless they plan their branding and identity campaign as a whole concept.
If you're comfortable taking their money for a job which isn't able to be done properly in the absence of any identity guidelines and they're too dumb to understand why they need an identity I suggest you just do your best - my experiences of clients like this is that they turn into a nightmare, nothing you do will ever be quite right and you'll end up spending months working on what I assume is a small budget project, as well as becoming frustrated and not doing your best work because you're basically getting ripped off.

everything that james just said!!

I agree with redmilk. Offer yourself to make an identity for them! There's a lot of backup out there to prove the importance.

My bet is whatever you use as a substitute logo they'll adopt as their corporate logo, hence saving money getting a real, solid and robust identity drafted up. Cheap skates!

appreciate all the really helpful reactions and advice!
im gonna try the approach of explaining the importance of an integrated company identity, then take it from there depending on their reaction..i reckon a logo/identity is more important than a web site if money is an issue!
thanks

Bunkum is probably right, so make sure whatever you use as a substitute logo looks absolutely shite and when they tell you to change it, invoice them for a corporate identity.

use some shits analogy like 'you wouldn't plant a vineyard on crappy soil and then change the soil when the yield is lame'
clients love analogies like that, cos they're stupid.
