The client wouldnt happen to be EDR - a freelance writer from London would it?
It's not worth you worrying about if the company is too short sighted and tight to realise that a web site (and eventually the business) is going to fail unless they plan their branding and identity campaign as a whole concept.
If you're comfortable taking their money for a job which isn't able to be done properly in the absence of any identity guidelines and they're too dumb to understand why they need an identity I suggest you just do your best - my experiences of clients like this is that they turn into a nightmare, nothing you do will ever be quite right and you'll end up spending months working on what I assume is a small budget project, as well as becoming frustrated and not doing your best work because you're basically getting ripped off.
