I've owned 3 versions of Freehand, but I'm still not much good at drawing with that program. I usually just do it in Flash and export to .ai, which seems stupid at this point.
How do I get better at drawing complex illustrations in Freehand or Illustrator? Any tutorials or advice? Books?

I never liked Freehand. Don't use Flash to create anything more than a primitive shape or to change a shape tween.
Just practice in Illustrator. Learn the subtleties of the pen tool. Learn the pathfinders, all the effects, how to expand them. It's a simple program that is very well built.
