I'm not saying I'm going with this logo, but I'm trying to do something more conceptual than just a nice font with good kerning and ligatures.

That's looking good.
Did you try the hexagon without curves?
You've lined up the hexagon to follow on the 'k' but what about a slight rotation so the space between the shape and the 'k' is irregular?
Dunno about the green, looks a bit sickly.

Yeah the green's definately not it. I'm actually looking at like a Swiss Army red.
I tried the straight edges and I just thought it made the whole thing look too contrived. I like the contrast of the sharp letters to the curves.
I tried your idea about the slight rotation. I hear ya, but the lack of symmetry is making me ill. I need help.

I dunno how soon you got to have the logo done by but if you get a chance check out a book...Karl Martens - Printed Matter/ Drukwerk. There's some great examples of design using 'swiss' typography and 'simple' shapes (like what you used).
Worth a look if not a place on your book shelf.
