I am in LA till the 18th, pretty much looking for places and getting familarized with the area. So far I am not feeling it as much as I thought I would. Is there anyone in the area that knows of anything good going around or would like to give me ideas as to where I should go.
Thanks
Matt

shellie is from there i think... or close to it. she's on the down low.
i know there are a few more on here from there but she's the only one that comes to mind.
what can i say... she's a cute woman who sticks out in my mind.

Well there is Bergamont Station in Santa Monica with a whole bunch of cool artist shows.
also black market gallery shows some great artwork. their phone is 213-383-9299 . food wise titos tacos off the 405 in west la is great along with Cafe Brasil on venice blvd. anyways dont know what you really want to do.
Going downtown is always cool for me to just walk around. you could take the metro down there.

Anyone else have some ideas of places to go or areas to check for ideal living?

west side rentals is a good resource if youre actually looking to rent. it costs money but you WILL find something cool through there. or you can drive around likei do for small apartment buildings. i like the west side so i cruise west LA, Brentwood, santa monica, venice and malibu. but, you can do the same thing on the east side in Los Feliz, Silverlake, Echo Park, Pasadena, South Pas (south pas actually has some affordable apartments) etc... just drive around looking for signs. if you know someone in the area so you dont get lost to go with you that would probably work a little better.
also cruise neighborhoods with big ass estates or big houses. ive had many friends find affordable guest houses to rent that way.
surprisingly.. a lot of the awesome apartments are never advertised. they go fast just having a for rent sign out front and never make it to the internet.

I was actually in LA last week checking out spots to live. I'll be moving soon and am looking on the west side for an apt. I will have to meet up with the LA/newstoday crew when I am out there.
As far as something to do... I really enjoyed the Getty Center - it was something really nice to do for a few hours, and it was only $5 parking!

the ghetty center is beautiful eh? i dont like most of the art work there but usually has good shows traveling through. the building is great.. awesome view.
next time you go there. park way down the street (ghetty center drive) for free. its pretty far. but they have a shuttle that will take you directly back up to the ghetty center. theres also a bus that runs the same way and theres a bus stop that drops off right in front. it'll save you 4 bucks :)
or you can walk and get some excersize.

yeah totally.. we spent way more time checking out the architecture and gardens on the outside than we did the artwork. The 'Strange Days' exhibit was pretty good though.

thigns to do:
if you have a car.. now is the perfect time to drive up PCH.. 2 hours north you'll find yourself in beautiful Santa Barbara. Its an awesome drive if you have time for a day trip.
if you have 30 bucks you can take a cruise over to catalena island for a day. its a nice boat ride over and its so pretty there. you can catch the catalena express out of long beach.
if you are into shopping.. theres shopping everywhere.
main street and abbot-kenny street in venice are worth a stroll around.. and the venice canals at night are cool.
griffinth (sp) park and the observatory is a nice afternoon in los feliz. and then you can cruise the shops on vermont. the xtra large store is there.
if you actually move to LA.. its a lot nicer once you have a group of friends to hand out with.
move here with a job if you can.

I will be honest, I am blown away at how much places cost here. It seems like all the places that are somewhat reasonable are is some crapy ass areas. I mean I lived in Boston for five years, but I am truly surprised... I would love to live in Santa Monica or ?Beachwood but Im thinking it might be to expensive.

that's what I noticed too. I was staying at a friend's 2br/1ba apt they pay $1400/mo for and said that was a good deal. But, no central heat/air and very old bldg. Do you already have a job out there arythmic?
- shellie0
santa monica isnt cheap if you want a 2 bedroom.
1400 is a good deal. where are they at? i have no central air or heat but im 10 blocks from the beach so i have moderate weather all year round.. but mine is 1750. im looking to move to something like what i have but cheaper. i moved into my current apartment in a hurry. bad idea :(
- 1201am0
they live in culver city
i'll be looking for a cheap 1br, or either a roommate to share a nice 2br if anyone knows of anything
My job will be in Century City, which I heard was pretty pricey also.
- shellie0
i thought century city would be cheaper. the sony lot is there tho and some big buisnesses. it probably brings the property value up.
if you like nice.. you have to pay the price. nice isnt cheap.. anywhere.
if you're willing to live a little more *artsy* and lower budget.. you can make a cheaper apartment in a not as bad area and have extra money to enjoy yourself in LA. Live within your means here. living paycheck to paycheck isnt smart here. LA is unforgiving.
I couldnt live in the apartment I have if it wasnt for my boyfriend making 2ce as much as I do. Otherwise I'd be living in echo park, too.
- arythmic0
yeah I pretty much have a job lined up doing post. Anyway, im off to go look for more places.. peace

Your probably going to hate it here, 90% of the people in LA suck, its a very ugly city and the amount of smog in the air is just plain disgusting. Lack of culture, its all about image, status, what you drive and how much you make and what you wear. Its bullshit =)

good luck, haha
