ws to me says last resort... like shit, the .com .net .org .nu .co.uk extensions were taken so we settles for .ws
that shit doesn't even roll off the toungue proper... I say fuck it.

Is there any significance to it? Does it stand for anything? I never heard of that.

Very true, lilbabyleg - besides, who the fuck's going to remember '.ws'?
I say this, because I've had the exact conversation with the owner of a company in NE England who's domain had a .ws suffix - he said "um.. it stands for 'World Service'?". Aha.

Web Site ???

.ws stands for "web site"
My opinion concerning domains is always go for a .com and keep trying until you find one if you're launching a company or corporate site.
Anything less doesn't look professional and isn't widely accepted by the masses. People just expect everything to be .com because that's all you ever hear/see on tv and in ads.
Now if you're putting up a portfolio or personal site don't worry about the .com if it's not available. My portfolio site is .net and does the trick.
Note: I'm writing from the US so my comments don't concern the .co.uk domain. For all I know that could be more popular than the .com in the Kingdom.
