A friend is considering moving to the San Francisco area. Any help regarding design offices and areas to search for apartments would be greatly appreciated. His skills mainly center around print work.
Thanks in advance.

Just a bit of advice
Before he moves, make sure he has a job.
Way to many out of work designers here, and even more homeless people. Have fun looking and good luck, but that is my only advice. Dont move till you have secured a job....
and if you get one here... you are damn damn good at somethign and damn lucky

yes.. what qburt said.. and also probably have some roommates in mind also. living alone up there is very expensive. All my working friends up there make good money... and none of them can afford to live alone.

don't believe a word of what qburt says! search PV-AN for "moving to the bay area" to see him discourage me from the same move. He works for the Bay Area ACC (Anti-Chamber of Commerce) - and gets paid to tell people not to move here. He doesn't just limit this to me either, search PV-AN for "bay area" and see him discourage everyone in every thread about the Bay!

He's leaving this Tuesday to scope things out in the area. I was hoping to pass along a list of some design offices he could look into while visiting the San Francisco and San Rafael areas.

yeah, i gotta say your friend is an idiot for leaving without securing a job first.
but hey, subway is probably hiring somewhere in the sf area. he can be a sandwich artist.

and qburt, just for your info, i am now have a sweet consulting job in the bay area and am living in sunny Palo Alto with a 2 bedroom apartment and a pool. i'm 35 minutes to the beach and just watched the sunset over the ocean last night. to think that if i'd have listened to you, i'd still be a web developer in suburban chicago.
i think the anti-move to the bay area sentiment is more a right of initiation than a real threat. sure i know some people that have been out of work for a while, but i also know plenty more that have found work, and are totally in love with the area. only rave revues so far.
- backspace0
aint a damn thing wrong with suburban chicago, dude.
- xrusos0
plus, getting a job in the bay is hard enough with being here... add looking for a job from far away, and it IS impossible.
my advice, save some reserves to get you buy for a bit. then make your move and go for it.
- Mimio0
He's going to visit, not moving permanently yet.

i agree... if you're good enough... you'll get a job... simple!

good for you, and i wasnt trying not to get him to move here.. just saying its smart to have a job..
i think you are luckier than most.
i never said it wasnt a great place to live, i just know to many people who are struggling is all and try to prepare people for the hard ships.. because its common knowledge that its a great place and that finding a job is a great thing.
sorry i got heated in that last thread, andyour comment above were uncalled for... I just had been really bummed at all the people I know here getting laid off and being homeless....
your old thread came at a bad time
- unknown0
ps... i never said dont come scope it out.... just dont move here...
sometimes i think you have a little bit more of a chip on your shoulder x
- xrusos0
smile q. smile. nothing but love from me. just remembered that thread from back in the day. sorry to bring up bad memories. i definitely had no way of knowing your personal struggles with this.
