and qburt, just for your info, i am now have a sweet consulting job in the bay area and am living in sunny Palo Alto with a 2 bedroom apartment and a pool. i'm 35 minutes to the beach and just watched the sunset over the ocean last night. to think that if i'd have listened to you, i'd still be a web developer in suburban chicago.
i think the anti-move to the bay area sentiment is more a right of initiation than a real threat. sure i know some people that have been out of work for a while, but i also know plenty more that have found work, and are totally in love with the area. only rave revues so far.
