Although well written and well meaning, there is nothing in that article that is not taught in business school or basic managerial training. If the designers dont know how to stay ahead of the curve and please the client then let them fade away and find work elsewhere in a field more suited for them. The lack of formal business education is no excuse for ignorance of the business world and its processes ... design related or otherwise. There is no revolution needed, just smarter revolutionaries.

don't you guys feel that design is ultimately dependant on the intelligence of the observer and not the intelligence of the designer?
let me see if I can articulate...
designers are bummed because they don't get to be involved in the process and spend time to make something unique or innovative. BUT the reasons for this lack of attention by clients to design is that the majority of communication doesn't need to be smart simply because the majority if the audience is not sophisticated enough to react to something smart or unique.
I know that's the case in the USA. The vast majority of the consumers over here are just too ignorant and unsophisticated to appreciate a really good design that can speak on several levels...
so clients naturally question why they need to spend money developing something sophisticated when they just need to move the product out there to the herd. just look at the entertainment industry for glaring examples.
I say it's about the level of intelligence of the audience and until that level is raised, sophisticated design is out the window, hello more garbage design.

"Garbage design" is relative though. Just look at some of the links in NTB. Some of them are great, others absolute crap (IMO). The goal is not to like it, just make the client happy. At the end of the production cycle it's not your anymore anyways ... its the clients. And if you can inject a sense of style and character at the same time then it's a bonus.
