Who's done it? How horrible was it? How much did it cost? Any help will be appreciated! :)

From Michigan to Arizona 3 years ago. cost roughly $2500 to do and it was absolutely TERRIBLE!
Do not rent a truck from Penske, pieces-o-shit!
:P

Is the best way to do it just sell all your shit and fly then? Or pack it up and ship it UPS or something?

a year ago 3 of my buddies moved from chicago to san diego.
they rented a truck ($1000) with a tow for a car, and also loaded the 3rd guys car with stuff and drove across country.
i went along for the ride and to give the guys company so knowone had to drive alone the whole trip. (they all pitched in and bought me a ticket to fly back)
it sucked. actually it REALLY sucked. it was cool for maybe the first half of the trip then it was just like "why the hell are you doing this" the rest of the way.
by the time they reached san diego they were at each others throats.
the only cool thing was we bought these awesome walkie talkies to stay in touch with each other.

I guess it depends how much stuff you have, and how attached you are to it.
Where you movin' to?

sell what you dont need.
moving is expensive when you have a lot of shit.if you do it for less than 2,000 then i think you are doing well.
ive gotta move an hour away in a month and a half or so and i expect to spend around 800. but i also have a lot of help. =)

i think if you're feeling the need for change you should do it - you can always utilize the internet and networking to meet ppl

ship all your stuff via Amtrak. I did it from Boston to Seattle and then back from Seattle to Btown. 23 boxes for about $230.
- ryn80
Amtrak? really? How does that work?

a year ago i moved from ann arbor mich to san diego. a friend and i just packed what we could into our cars (ie no furniture/etc) and left. it was fun and pretty cheap. we stopped in vegas and some nice spots in colorado. i wouldn't want to do it in a moving van/truck though...probably pretty tedious. good luck if you do move!

You just have to get your stuff to an Amtrak station, boxed up tight and they put it on this wooden pallet, wrap the whole pallet with plastic and then weight the whole thing. You're charged by bulk weight not by box.

I just typed a bunch about my experiences but I timed out and so I'm shortening it quite a bit.
Moved across the country twice. From San Diego to Boston and back. Rented a Penske truck, both times they ran great. We slept in the back, and had a couch back there to hang out on. It and it had a door between the cab and the back so we could go back there anytime. We also had a trailer with a car so we could park the truck and drive the car into the bigger cities. We got a couple extra days as well so that we had time to do everything that we wanted and did some pretty big zig zags across america. It was about $2000 for the truck, the trailer, unlimited miles and a few extra days.
I had a great time, wouldn't have gave it up for anything.

Moved from JC to Berlin. Then 5 yrs later - Berlin to LA. Sell everything that you can't carry with you. Life is too short to be clinging to crappy clutter. I haven't regretting anything I got rid of (sold two full apartments of stuff of two person's). How much stuff do you really need? Do they have that stuff where you're going? note: If you coming to Cali, bring lots of green and/or a car.

I moved from Wolverhampton to Shrewsbury, 35 whole English miles, it sucked. 8 car journeys, only wish I'd hired a van.

i went from atlanta to la in 3 days. packed what would fit in the car (didn't own much) and drove through the desert. all by myself. not so bad.
