Good if you really dig the music.
Bad if you don't like it but try to like it to look cool. Like the majority of young people.

Jazz is its own reward

Jimmy Smith gets my vote.
He's incredible.

no-one really listens to music at home just because it got labelled as cool. Do they?
I listen to Django Reinhardt; Ella Fitzgerald, Dr John, Billie Holiday, ... because their music kicks ass, not because it's 'cool'

Fusion.
Doesn't quite move me like a good ol' Miles At the plugged nickel or some nice Matthias Lupri quartet (this guy is the next vibes master).

I love this music, but I still want to bash john scofield's guitar on the wall since I saw him play in a jazz session about 2 weeks ago. Man, that guy is good, but he just plays too much. LET THE OTHER MUSICIANS BREATHE JOHN!

I think Jazz is a greatly misunderstood term. I think it's really a blanket term for any music that exists outside the mainstream and that has improvisational elements.
I mean it covers so many styles. Be-bop, swing, rhythm & blues, fusion, jazz funk, afro cuban, samba, free form, trad, big band, and jump jive are all termed as jazz but are very different from each other.
I don't like trad or free form but i like 'jazz.'

I reckon Roy Ayers is really Soul/funk not jazz and Weather Report are definitely fusion.

jazz is cool, but it sounds great too. I like it because it's intellectual, but it can appeal to emotions in different ways, even the simplest ones. It can be relaxing. It can amp you up. It's the perfect analogy for the life I wanna lead. Organized chaos, improvisation, weird harmonies, virtually unlimited possibilities.
