does anyone know if it is possible to open up a .pdf document in acrobat itself rather than the acrobat browser plugin from within flash mx?

Flash generally doesn't play well with other programs...there have been some limited attempts to make flash a director of marrying the right files to the right app, but they haven't met with a lot of success, and seem to be pretty client-side oriented.

The closest thing I can think of is if you can open the thing in Illustrator. If the pdf was created in Illustrator you probably can. Then, you could reformat the thing yourself and import it into Flash. Then, you could keep the original pdf and make it #p frame for printing within Flash.

seems like something you could probably do with javascript, couldn't you?
like write some js function to open the pdf with acrobat, then just call that function from within flash.
the other thing you could look into is using an app like swf studio or flash studio pro to add a browser window into your flash movie. mind you, these can only output .exes so if this is for web-only or mac then forget it.

if it's an exe, then its not a problem, but from a site i'm not too sure
