I'm wondering if anyone here has experience with using CSS instead of tables for layout.
It's been interesting using CSS for my upcoming site, but I'm finding its taking longer for me to layout my images using the mentioned technique rather than tables. It's actually getting a bit frustrating.
Is there perhaps a tutorial or resource I could refer to for help?

I switched my portfolio site over a couple months ago and I went through the same problems. It's tough at first but once you get it, you'll never go back to tables.
Here's a few sites I use the most for that:
Hope this helps.

Heh.
Yep, been to a couple of those, though I am looking at the links that I haven't been to right now.
I haven't been able to find a comprehensive tutorial about laying out images, and its driving me crazy!

gotta agree with gabriel.. first time it's a REAL pain in the ass. The second site, it's not too bad and things start to seem lighter. By the time you get to your third fully standard project, table use comes into perspective and you begin to feel silly for using them so fluently at one point.
All great links here, and zeldman's book (from chapter 6 forward) is fantastic:

So, what browsers out there are still not CSS friendly? I created a three column layout with CSS the other day that looked good in NS and IE but then not so great in Safari.

i can eat! i can eat! yaaay!!!
Just about all modern browsers support CSS / XHTML pretty well, with some minor quirks, like MS' box model and flkoat support and Opera's something or other.
Safari seemed odd to me, in that most of my stuff would work in everything, but. And then Mac militants would throw shit at me and tell me it had to be my code that was wrong.
4cY should be a good resource on Safari's CSS support, as he did an incredible job with it on a recent project.
Most of the links stated above have most necessary minor hacks and workarounds to get around the browser limitations wihtout writing 5 versions of your site, which is the point of all this standards BS in the first place.
And as I mentioned (and almost done with) Zeldman does a great job of putting them all together. both on his sites and in his book.

and do not forget the wonderful bunch of links Zeldman offers to even more worthy CSS-goodness...

Thanks everyone.
I might get that book. But I'll likely read the sites first and see if they can help me.

Okay you see this site:

Is the way he laid out the images how you are supposed to do it with CSS, because I never thought about using blank images.

Er, actually I am doing the same thing in my own way, so never mind about my previous question.

I've found that CSS is cool but is not great for more complex layouts.

read about: "The Elusive CSS Footer"
I've become happy with using tables to set up the bones of the site and use DIV's for the rest. Then I run it through here...
...and call it a day.
