A friend of mine is in need of some advice. He contacted me this morning with a question. Seems as though a gentleman started working at his company last week and was put in one of four cubicles in his room. The problem as he states is that this gentleman "nice guy as he is" is about 350+, easy and carries with him a very bad odor. He asked me what if anything he can do aside from air freshener and insence.
I wasn't sure. Should he have a chat with him in private? If so what would he say? He doesn't want to offend anyone here. I said he should talk to his boss or the HR woman and let them deal with it while keeping out of it.
He says it's "beyond terrible" and "it lingers in the room even after he leaves" and he's afraid (this one made me laugh) "it's going to get on my clothes like those medical students and people are going to smell it on me thinking I stink."
What should/can he do... if anything.
He is a designer btw working downtown for a firm.... just to keep this somewhat design related.
Thanks.

definitely notify management. they will have to take on the unsavory task of talking with the guy. we had problem of similar nature here.

that sucks! Definitely let HR or the Boss deal with it. If he smells that bad then other people have probably noticed as well and he won't know who said anything.
and even if he does who cares!
:P

Kona,
If he's at a company that has an employee manual, which most do-it will likely have a section describing "general appearance, dress code, hygeine and grooming."
If there's an HR person there, tell the friend to talk to them. Seriously. If something isn't working in an office environment, they want to know and they'll do something about it.
A persons stench seems like a legitimate reason to talk to HR and get something done.

I agree with going to HR first. Tell him to burn a candle in his cube in the interim.

a wood chipper and some lye.
no one will ever find the body.

can't burn a candle, I'm sure. Fire regulations. big trouble in most offices I think.

at one of the places i interned at (in house for a distributing company) a telephone customer service girl's cubicle was right outside my office. I noticed that there was a horrible smell whenever i walked by. Finally, i told an HR person (being an intern, i didn't want to approach her myself). Turns out that many complaints were made about the smell and that HR found out that the girl had a condition where her feet were literally rotting from the inside out and there was nothing she could do about the smell. I am SO thankful i didn't bring it up myself. HR gets paid to deal with those situations, let them.

really mg33? we burn candles here all the time...don't tell the fire marshall.

well, I know that some places have rules about that thing, especially when a fire sprinkler with smoke detection is overhead. They're pretty sensative I think

i got a candle burnin right now.
it helps focus my astral energies and calms the evil spirits.

put some deoderant or cologne on his desk and put a sticky saying USE ME DAILY!!
- unknown0
we did that to a kid in high school, put a stick of deoderant on his desk because he smelled like sand and dirt all the time.
no laundry, no shower= no good.
- mitsu0
put cedar wood chips all over his desk and chair.. and compliment that with a human sized carriage wheel for him to run in.
- mayo0
get everyone a misting fan for their cube. fill his with Lysol.
or have an "air freshener fight" like you would with silly string.
start calling him "stinkmeister"

remember the scene in se7en with all the air fresheners hung from the ceiling???
yeah...
