Thanks, Dr. Jay.

Also... there are a few books that have extensive lists of no-fee apartments.
here's one: http://www.metropolis.offc.com/c…
Your roommate situation sounds okay, though... Chinatown is great... Brooklyn is good option, too... I found some great deals in East Harlem, too (near the park, very nice)...

Re: NYC apt. brokers...
The apt. broker system is one of the biggest rackets in NYC... Just be aware up front of what fees you'll be paying them once they find you a place. If you can avoid using a broker, do it. Every time I used a broker to find a place (even though I was happy with the broker and the apt.) it was painful to pay the fee for a place i was RENTING...

Okay, here's what's going on. The nice place with all the artists & musician, etc... (the room with the window!!) is totally available to me. The girl who lives there just called. Of course I'm going to check everything out first, but she seemed really lovely & the place sounds perfect.
As for when I get here, I'm staying at the Chelsea Inn for a few days, & then at a friend's house until August 7th... that is, if I decide to move in with that girl... which is likely at this point. I don't have to live there forever if I don't like it either. And she seemed really cool about that. Oh, and she accepts pets!!! It's all too good to be true.

Brooke, you aren't looking at these places in NYC yourself, right... Wait until you can check it out yourself. though I agree it is cut-throat, you need to check it out.
You must have a place to stay when you first get east right? I am sure many of us NTers would put you up for a bit (even me, though I'm on the NJ side of the river).

i'd go for the window.but it depends on what YOU really want and where you really want to be.
