Actually, what would YOU do? I have an offer to live in a place by Chinatown... cheap rent, awesome roommates, great location, I'll have my own room. But the catch is that the room comes with no windows. Everything else is perfect, though.
Anyway I have to give them a call today & I'm wondering what you all would do in this situation?

go for it..
s'long as its big enough for your personal needs, and whatever..
my office doesn't have windows, and i spend all day here...no problem..
when you need a window, just keep your door open and occasionally step outside the room and have a walk about...hang out in the kitchen or living room for a bit...
if all the rest of the stuff you've mentioned is true..sounds like a good deal...cheap rent and great roommates.....i'd go for it..
just keep your eyes and ears open for a better deal once you get there...
if you get some great contracts for your illustration, and find in year or so you can afford a nicer place, then you can split..but for right now..i'd definitely go for it

take it, NYC is cutthroat, you can move on in a year. ;)

take it.
not much of a view in chinatown. and in the summer, it means the scents coming out of those butcher shops won't woff into your room.
not that I hate chinatown. i love it. especially the food there. and it's my people. but it's not the best smelling part of manhattan.
- kpl0
actually, I can't remember any part of manhattan that smelled nice.

exador, good advice. Plus, brooke you are in Chinatown a very nice spot in terms of getting around to everywhere else. Of course my spoiled ass was living on 2nd and 82nd for 2 years, but I would have been just as happy in CTown.

we'll paint you a picture of a window... with any view you want.

chinatown inspirates.
go go!

I love windows. I got like 20+ in my apartment.
But it sounds like you got a nice opportunity going. I'd take it if everything else is what you want.
Don't move into a shoebox just to be in the city, though.

i meant : inspires.
a few friends of mine been there a couple o' months before and brought me some nice souvenirs.

There's another place, too, damnit, that sounds absolutely amazing. The building is filled with artists, writers, musicians... the rent is cheap & my roommates again will be cool. I'll even get my own room WITH a window. But it's on the upper west side & I'd rather live closer to Soho, Chelsea, etc...

DONT take it.
I did for a year and it was a bad vibe.

Jesus would most likely move OUT of NYC and take the train in.

is there much common space? if you can go sit by a window then do it.

i'd go for the amazing cheap windowed place filled with artists, musicians, writers

i'd go for the window.but it depends on what YOU really want and where you really want to be.

Brooke, you aren't looking at these places in NYC yourself, right... Wait until you can check it out yourself. though I agree it is cut-throat, you need to check it out.
You must have a place to stay when you first get east right? I am sure many of us NTers would put you up for a bit (even me, though I'm on the NJ side of the river).

Okay, here's what's going on. The nice place with all the artists & musician, etc... (the room with the window!!) is totally available to me. The girl who lives there just called. Of course I'm going to check everything out first, but she seemed really lovely & the place sounds perfect.
As for when I get here, I'm staying at the Chelsea Inn for a few days, & then at a friend's house until August 7th... that is, if I decide to move in with that girl... which is likely at this point. I don't have to live there forever if I don't like it either. And she seemed really cool about that. Oh, and she accepts pets!!! It's all too good to be true.

sounds like a decent set-up. no worries, its going to work out.
