starting a dvd project for a client. production company from UK filmed the footage and provided us with betacam tapes. the DVD will be distributed globally.
Questions I have.
1. will we need to produce 2 versions of the project for DVD, 1 for NTSC and 1 for PAL formats?
2. would the production company have captured the footage as PAL since they are form the UK.
3. If it is captured as PAL will it matter once it's transfered from betacam tape to dvd for editing.
some of these ?s might not even make sence in which case i apologize. i'm a newbiw to all of this but I'm learnin'.

is it a PAL tape? you'll have to capture it in the format that it's in, unless you are going to run it through some kind of standards converter first.
most PAL players should play NTSC discs, with some stipulations.... it depends on where it is going to be released/distributed. If the client isn't going to pay for 2 versions, I'd go with NTSC.
btw..it's a good idea to stipulate the format of materials to be received from the client in your contract or at the beginning of work (at least) then there are no "surprises" and the Client is responsible for providing you materials in the format you can work with.
good luck..

RULE # 1
NEVER ASSUME ANYTHING.
1. you will hav to get pal and ntsc versions of the project...any transfer house can do that. If it is global, you will have to do both NTSC and PAL, unless you are willing to take a huge risk and only make ntsc.
2. yes. uk = pal.
3. Yes. PAL resolution is significantly different than NTSC. you will need to make menus different for both (NTSC = 720x480, PAL = 720x576), so that drastically effects the design. You can design only 1 set of menus if you leave lots of blank space for the different resolutions.
You are basically going to have 2 times the work...if you have more questions, ask away...
