client wants a logo with a cast shadow. can i do this in vector format? (easly) or do i tell them bitmap or nothing?

you have a few options.
1. you can make a drop shadow by copying and pasting the image and then arranging it behind the original graphic and changing it's color to be grey (or whatever. you can dick around with this a bit to get different effects2. you can copy and paste the graphic and stretch/skew it until it is the mirror image of the original. you can then either change the color to a solid or a gradient that makes it look like it is fading into light.
dig me? if you want a feathered edge look, you can play with gradient maps, but some programs will not accept this for reproduction.

in addition to what Bio said, Illy 10 does it all for you. the shadows even have blurred edges. boop! boop! boop!

yeah they want fuzzy edges. like a shadow in psd.

don't do it! don't make another logo with a cast shadow.... oh no... oh no.... I'M MELTING, MEEEELLTING!

yea. problem with that is in reproduction.
if they want to use it on other projects, you will need to give them a highres bitmap of the file.
other vector programs might not be able to translate ai10 drop shadows.
though it would be possible to rasterize the shadow and export it all as eps. that way you keep the type in curves, but the shadow doesnt get screwed up from application to application.

it SO is not my idea for the shadow. i made a couple cool logo comps for them and they did not like them. then he emails me and is like "can you do something like this....." BLAH
- Bio0
it happens.
basically everything that people ever ask me for has a drop shadow.
there is nothing wrong with a drop shadow, but they shouldnt be used on every goddamned logo in the south. (bitterness).
haha, give em what they want and then put your fav comp in your portfolio.

thanks what i plan to do :)
and that is what i have done in the past.i am not ashamed to make a drop shadow.
drop shadow = me getting paid.
