I guess starting this thread stemmed from that occasional "is the grass greener somewhere else" deal that every employee gets. Also, I see so many nice NTer sites that push the technology and wonder where everyone has the time to update their stuff.
Also, I don't think freelancers are considered unemployed. If you're relying on yourself like that, I KNOW you're making more than me :)

Yeah, I'll back sauerbraten on that one cuz he basically just handed me his old job.
;)*high five!*

i've been employed for a year after a 4 month unemployment stretch. I don't think it's gotten that much easier and I don't think NYC was hit that much harder than other cities. After 9/11, it was very bad, but now, it's more even. I don't think it's going to change much for a few years.

since past friday I'm unemployed but with peace of mind and new energy to paint and new ideas to design.
Tomorrow I'll start to update my portfolio and cv and look for another job... or maybe my ex-boss will realize that a me working part time is a good idea after all.
I don't know, but I'll try to stay positive as long as I can (or as long as the money last hehehe)

design compared to other jobs
how bad is it really?
- capitalJ0
um i think the comment about it being more even and that it was really bad in nyc after september 11th and not so much anymore i feel is complete and utter bullshit
ive been on an off unemployed for a year and im in the middle of a 3 month stretch with no job
ive been to 14 interviews in the past 6 months
out of my friends, those who have jobs for the most part graduated from college prior to 2002 out of my department graduating class of 30 kids in 2002 only 3 have steady jobs and only 1 of them is in NYC
and if you didnt see the cover of the daily news last weekour unemployment is at 8.1 percent
far beyond the national average

in the name of love i was unemployed. :/
i dont know, but never again...
- CyBrainX0
I didn't mean to imply that it was easy now. I'm just saying that the only time it was much worse in NYC than the rest of the country was for a while after 9/11. After that, I don't think it's that much worse. What happened in Silicon Valley was worse.
You can't rely that much on unemployment figures. Since they don't tell you how people are unemployed, underemployed, etc., they are a little skewed. Also, if you were to know the % in the graphics industry it would be much higher.

I've been unemployed for about 7 or 8 months out of the last 2 years. Before that it was plain sailing. Now i have a semi-ok job but still not happy.

nyc here.
got axed along with about 20 something other people back in Oct 2002. Been surviving solely on freelance since working 15-20 hr days nearly 7 days a week.SO technicaly unemployed but actually working more now then before.
I'd still like a fulltime job though. Something with health care.

I was unemployed after a layoff for 8 months. Freelance work was plentiful BUT the hard part for me was doing new business dev. and getting work done at the same time. So, I was always stressed out about whether I could get a new client to pay bills. I caved and took a design job I hate but its money and I'm regrouping and learning some new things. Keep the faith.

once in a while I'll get people sending me resumes and such cos they think I'm some huge design firm. Some of them are alright, but you should see some of these emails people send. My God.. no wonder why so many are unemployed. The emails are horrible, the resumes are all over the place .. and the portfolios have no focus or noticeable growth whatsoever. And they expect a job? I think most should rethink their approach, or have someone else draft their resume and cover letter for them. It looks at first glace that most didn't even graduate high school.

Plus, getting a (good) job is like getting into a (good) college. It's not enough these days to just have good grades to get into and ivy league, you have to have a 4.0, community service, and possibly even more to stand out.
People seem to think they deserve ivy league design jobs with ivy league salaries with a community college worthy portfolio. Unfortunately it isn't 10 years ago. Your html impresses no one.
However this certainly is not true for all of the unemployed. For some its a bad self marketing plan. For others they're not motivated enough .. and others just pure bad luck.

Alot of sh*t designers out there for sure....
Good posts Shellie

im lucky. i have a job, but tonight, i start sending out resumes. tired of being here. these fuckers only gave me a 50 cent raise (no rapper jokes please), so i am irritated.
shellie, you are first on my list. you will be receiving a copy of my resume, cover letter, portfolio, and some nudie pics of president bush that i photoshopped onto some gay porn. so if you have any openings at your studio, please keep in mind that not many people can make george bush have a tool that big and have it look real.
=)

youre hired. when can you start. we have an immediate opening to photoshop me some knockers like tyra banks.
please send samples. :)
