sparker, i respect your stand.
the identidy marks i put together are legit. but when it comes to foolin around, i take. yeah it might be wrong, but nabbin fonts to experiment is not a bad idea imho
i dont know what a good font is until i know what a bad one is
and there is nothing worse than a bad font purshase
hate on me all you want
this is how i work

bah...that's not farmland...missouri is farmland.
:)

bonsef: at the very least, and this is all i request, you have enough sense not to trade commercial fonts *here*.

i could deal with simply using a font for something completely private and on a 'test and delete' basis...but no one is that honest. once you justify it for even the smallest private use, what is to stop you from going ahead and using it for a client comp? which is illegal at that point.
we're not talking morals here, we are talking the law. it is illegal to use something that you are not accepting the license for nor paying for...
this is why the GPL was created...if people want to give their shit away free, they are welcome to it...and i wish more people believed in open-source. i actually hate proprietary software...i think everything should be freely available, source and all..but that isn't the way the world works and we have a legal and ethical responsibility as professionals to agree to those terms. it's called working in the real world.
i knew guys in college that pirated form-z because it's what the school of architecture used...i didn't bother with bitching at them because most of them deleted it after the semester was over...but after i left architecture and got into writing code and i learned quick how much of my time and effort went into it...and i discovered why so many companies hate piracy.
as for the 'poor' student...i agree with vena, if you can't find a work around for something you don't have the cash for, then your not trying hard enough.
architecture school required an extra 1000+ out of a students pocket for supplies...building models, drawing supplies, etc...it cost tons...i worked 2 jobs and pulled my all-nighters in studio to afford all that shit...so i don't have any respect for someone who can't find a way to support their education or tools needed for the business.
sorry. i didn't come from a rich mommy and daddy...in fact if was just my mommy, and i paid my way to school with loans, scholarships and grant money...plus working every day.
and i still managed to not steal software or fonts or supplies or designs or anything.
i can honestly say i've never installed a piece of illegal software on my box, and i've never even used kazaa or napster for downloading mp3s. i buy cds if i like the music.
part of it is because i'm super uptight about my computers...i hate the idea of unwanted bullshit clutter in my file systems...and, after pulling time as a system admin, i'm a big security freak when it comes to servers and workstations. hell, i bought and use PGP for my email and for the freespace wiper included just to keep my hdd running cleanly and to secure my email.
:)

oh shit. as far as vena's comment about the school buying fonts...
if i had requested that, i would have been told to go to hell. i dont know about your school, but at my school, there is barely enough money in the budget to support a fine arts dept. much less requests for font purchases.
this isnt an arguement to advocate piracy, more the way it is.
and save the arguement that a design student should take another job so he can afford the fonts he wants. thats just insane.

ok this thread is going in circles :)
let's just leave it at this, shall we? as it always was, it continues now - use this board for illegal shit, and get banned.
we're far too public to be allowing that kind of thing here.

Piracy is KING
- sexypixel0
on the same subject...
I just watched a dvd and there was a ad about piracy. It said...
"piracy ruins the record and film industry
piracy fund terrorism"what the fuck? terrorism, i cant believe they use that as a tactic. I just saw Bin Laden selling copies of the hulk down the market last night

industry and business fund stupidity
- Blofeldt0
I haven't read this whole thread but I do hope that all you law abiding font protectors do not use music file sharing software because that's stealing too.
- unknown0
everyone has stolen fonts. absolutely everyone. i dont believe people who said that they dont have it. is just not possible. who can pay the whole univers family, or the whole trade gothic.
haha
- mbr0
On this note, what about all the free fonts? I've only bought on or two fonts, ever, but I've never knowingly acquired an 'illegal' one, either. My work is mostly 3D, so it doesn't come up too often, just curious.
- unknown0
I think font foundries should try to enforce their royalties. If I was looking at the TV one day and someone used the font Id designed Id be one the phone checking they bought it...
but they dont, so swapping goes on.
- unfittoprint0
'piracy fund terrorism'....
Remember, kids: everytime you download some Justin Timberlake track, some bomb will explode in Tchetchenia.
;-p
- pugdawg0
fucking snore. you 18 year old designers are funny. You all think you know so much.
- sparker0
'piracy funds terrorism'
i have to admit, that is the fucking stupidest psa i've ever heard.
:)
i think i want that on a t-shirt.
it isn't hard to believe that people actually pay for their fonts. i won't spend the nearly 10k for the adobe font folio, but a couple hundred bucks for a font family is nothing.
- unknown0
actually I dont know where I stand...
work buys all the fonts we use, but I copy them and use them on private stuff, so technically is that piracy?
If I wanted to buy the fonts work has, it would be at least 6 figures

software, fonts, music, films....
doesnt matter. is the typical discussion. everyone has a tape with some music, or a blank cd with with some mp3, or a stolen font, or some software....as jesus said: "those who never..." shit i forgot it.
this thread is obsolete
