Herzog & de Meuron are one of my favourite architectural bureaus. Their work is amazing. I have a friend of mine working with them and there some incredible projects ready to see the light in the next couple of years.
Check examples of their work here, like the Dominus winnery, the Tate extension among others (a nice site, too):
Unfortunately, it seems one their most beautiful projects a spa in Switzerland is not in it. It's well worth a look.

The building cost $85 million, almost 3 times Prada's worldwide earnings for 2001. Ouch.

KELON I was thinking precisely the same thing after reading the nytimes article.
The person didn't seem to perceive the disconnect between the $85 million pricetag for the building and the "The Japanese branch of the company reported a net profit of $3.3 million in 2002." statement a few lines later.
I suppose that the project was undertaken several years back... before the precipitous drop in profits (net $59 -> $32 million over a single year), but even then it would have seemed a bit crazy.
Prada is a fashion label, but seems to be behaving sort of like a doomed dotcom.
I just hope that Prada survives long enough and holds onto that building long enough that I'll have a chance to check it out.

If they go bankrupt, you can probably get their stuff at bargain prices.

does it have a glide as in the US Prada building by Rem Koolhaas?
If I ever get there I so want to just glide down the floor. =)

They can spend more than $100 million on 2 stores but still can't launch a website after 7 years.

No I heard that in Europe Prada buys back unsold clothes every season and destroys them so that they aren't sold for significant discounts. That would hurt the brand.

Another scar of capitalism..
Wonder how many children died sewing their shit..
I like the architecture though..

They've got another snazzy building in the current issue of Architectural Record.
Their use of the 'skin' is truly amazing. I am not a huge fan, but they continue to come up with new and innovative solutions. I definitely have a huge amount of respect for them.

Child labor is illegal in Italy, so if the lable says Made in Italy it's pretty safe. Unlike Nike, Tomy, DKNY and other more affordable brands.
Gucci does have a reputation though.

Okay, my bad :-/
I thought they all did that cheap labour..

Quality companies with just a spash website only makes them hotter. They don't need the internet to rock things.
