i never submitted my site to google, but i did a search for my name just to see what would come up, and there it was. so does it just automatically show up on it's own after a while or what? thank u.

Not really a googluru but i think it does.
And how well it performs in the search results depends on how popular your site is. ie. how many other sites point to yours and how many clicks you get on your result.
I think there is a page on google that explains everything.

...as to meta tags, keywords, all kinds of things in your code that can make your site place higher.
when working for a software comany in college, they wanted me to evaluate this software that would help add keywords and all else to make the site rank higher. It sucked.
I went to http://www.searchengines.com and read for a few hours, did all the code changes and such myself and confidently told them, "Don't spend $100 on this software, I just fixed it for free." I kept track over the next 3-4 weeks (web ranking gestation period, if you will) and soon I was able to track the changes and notice that relevant keywords in a search were bringing our site up at #1 and #2.Go to http://search.yahoo.com/bin/sear…
See that #1 ranking? That's where I worked, what I did (did not do the site). Interesting to see it's still at # 1.
There are several companies below that feature "premium audit software" in their page title.
Some of the main things to get that result are having the same keywords and tags on every single page on the site, they will be indexed by most search engines.
Anyhow, read on search engines.com and you can really have an effect on how your site ranks.
hope that helps

I believe that once it is indexed then it stays there and if you choose exactly what your name(s) is then it should at least come up in the top ten, unless of course the name(s) you are using is common such as a fruit or something. However, with that being said, are people really going to be searching for your site by a specific name? Know what I mean? It's a bit different if someone searches digital typography, the chances of your site coming up in the top 300 is minimal to not at all. But I don't know you so you might rock the world at typography and your stuff might come up BIG in the future. :) I can say from past experience from working with Google, that meta-content and keywords don't seem to be such a big thing. To me it seems that your domain and content and quality and how it is linked from other sites has a lot to do with it. I got ranked numero uno in .WAV File rankings: http://directory.google.com/Top/… out of a ton of other site, so hmmm, don't know what I did right? Good Luck ;)

I never cared about any meta or anything, let google robots search for it...
funny,
I'm first in 'works, problems, experiences'

kodap-then if there's no meta tags or keywords, what will the robots find when searching?

they use a number of things I think according to their algorithym. I believe so anyway. I have ZERO meta-content on my site.
