A little bird told me this morning that MS will not be bringing out any more versions of IE for Mac platform.
Please tell me its a lie.
If nutscrape is also going down the pan what are Mac users going to be left with in times to come?
I also heard that upgrades of IE will only be available to OSX users, so that means classic users are buggered. Forced out of an OS that we have every right to keep as we have spent fortunes on software that wont work on OSX.
Im in a good mood this morning if you hadnt guessed.

I'm using Safari, no complaints thus far. Does everything fine, and even removes all frames from the edges of the browser which makes things look great (on OSX anyway).
There was an update this morning so I'm now on Beta2 (v74).Its fast, it imports all IE toolbar and bookmarks etc... and has built in toolbar google search box.
What more could you want.
Also has a cool "snap-back" feature which but I'm still working out what that does... (I just marked this page for snapback!) I imagine its a history thing.

so M$ forces apple to include explorer standards into safari.
and upgrade to OSX - it's worth it

OSX humbug.

depends!

I am using Mac OSX server for data storage but thats as close as the evil X will ever get to me.
If I am forced to go X I would sooner go ...dare I say it...PC.

*ouch*

Imagine if Windows brought out a new OS which meant users couldnt use their existing software.
It would cause a worldwide economic meltdown.
I would go PC out of principle for what Mac has done.

what about the classic environment?

this isn't the only software that isn't going to upgrade for Classic. What about Quark, InDesign and everyone else in the very near future? You must upgrade. As a creative you need to EVOLVE. If you can't afford to buy new, or at least get the OS, you will have to soon.
Here's what I would ask of Safari: just get released for real. Don't make me use a beta for surfing. The first beta doesn't do javascript well.

Where/who told you that? Been looking around but can't find any news on this.

you are bitter Seph.
Just for the record, new Macs can't boot into os-9 anymore,
and the next version of Photoshop (to be released this fall) will not have a os-9 version either..
- Seph0
4CY, I am bitter yes.
If you knew how much money I would have to spend to change form Classic to OSX you would be bitter too.

i've heard about this too, i'm worried more about the integration of IE to windows, and the affect this will have on designing for it on a mac, and....(i'll have a very small moan too) not only are you looking at a huge amount of money to upgrade to OSX and associated apps - more than likely a small/medium agency will have to replace a few macs too, my studio G4 400 runs os9 sweet - but it dies in osX... on the plus side, my G4 at home has ran osX since march 2002 and has only crashed 3 times.

"Imagine if Windows brought out a new OS which meant users couldnt use their existing software. "
They have. A couple times actually. But that's the evolution of technology. Change isn't always easy so you adapt or get left behind. It's expensive, yeah, but we don't use Macs because they're cheap.
- Seph0
Not wanting to push this thread into an OSX moan....
What recpos says is very true, if IE suddenly decide to develop and expand ActiveX or other stuff that wont run on a Mac then how are we going to develop it on a Mac?
Creating a decent emulator that runs at a decent speed might be a profitable enterprise for the future.
Its bad news for web developers on Mac platform.

there is obviously a thin line between treating loyal customers with the respect they deserve and fucking them over for the sake of Technological advances.
Windows, a couple maybe but never fundamental software. The biggest thing I can think of is MSmessenger, the version that only runs on Windows XP. Apart from that I dont know of any other examples.
- zanetate0
Really? I'm only 24 but I'm still old enough to remember MSDOS and Windows 3.1. Can you run any of that software now? No, and you probably wouldn't want to. The world changed, technology advanced, we adapted.
- unknown0
aww nooo! it's the end of the world! Get over it, eventually you do adapt and keep doing what you need to do to get the job done... Whining about it will do nothing but make the process more painful. It won't matter after awhile, it seems the windows and mac operating systems are getting more and more alike with each release. in another ten years i doubt there will even be a difference.

like i said. they force apple to make safari similar to explorer. good move from M$
