right well holdin the option key just gives me the option of starting up from the HD or the install disk so prob wont make much difference but thanks

to reboot with only Apple drivers hold down the SHIFT key. course, you're running OSX, there aren't any extensions.
To save music from iPod to HD grab a program called iPod.iTunes from http://www.versiontracker.com
but I guess all this is too late since you've gone and erased everything; sorry rainy day.... everything's slow.
